Shelly comes to Joel's office to confirm that she is pregnant. She wants Joel to tell Holling the news. She seeks advice about telling Holling from Maggie who says that the direct approach is best. They march up to Holling, deliver the news and he bolts. It seems that Holling has a deep-rooted fear about marriage. Both his father and grandfather were centenarians, while their wives died young This left them alone and grieving for over sixty years each. Holling has vowed to avoid a similar situation. Meanwhile, Maurice entertains a Japanese investor interested in building a resort in Cicely. He wants Joel's help in selling the idea. Joel is stand-offish until he hears that the resort would include an 18-hole golf course. That gets him thinking that if he were a partner, he could make enough money to pay off his indenture early. He goes all out win the investor over by setting up an Astroturf course on abandoned roads. He even is a good sport about losing to them. Shelly eventually talks Holling into a wedding. Maggie is maid of honor and Joel is best man. The wedding is underway and Holling is nowhere to be found. He was off fishing. They eventually get him to come to the church the second time, but during his part of the vows he stops. He asks Shelly to go outside with him. There he recites to loveliest set of vows ending with the fact that he can't say that in an official setting. All the guests have witness this out the window and clap. That's as much as Shelly will get, and she's fine with that.
