- "The Little Black Bag"
A technician, Gillings, is at work in 2098. Gillings is in the time travel division, and he contacts his director, Cosgrove, to tell Cosgrove that one of their time travel experiments inadvertently sent something back in time to 1971: a medical bag. They don't have a way to bring it back.
Two bums, Heppelwhite and former doctor William Fall, are walking through an alley and sit down to share a bottle of wine. They fight over the bottle, and Fall laments how he used to be a man of medicine and is now a wino. Fall explains that 20 years ago he had a problem with the county medical society. He says that he did some fee-splitting and careless misdiagnoses, and did an appendectomy drunk. Searching for scraps in a nearby garbage can, Fall finds the bag and opens it, finding advanced medical equipment inside. He figures that it's worth at least $10 and will let him buy a drink.
Fall and Heppelwhite take the bag to a pawnshop. A Puerto Rican mother comes in and asks for help with her sick daughter, and begs Fall to come help. Fall refuses to sell the bag and goes with the mother, confirms that the girl has a lymphatic infection, and treats her with the equipment from the bag. Fall has the mother step out in the hallway, then finds a card in the bag identifying the girl's infection. He gives the girl the recommended dosage and she instantly recovers. The mother comes back in and hugs her daughter, then blesses Fall. He packs up the bag and goes into the hallway with Heppelwhite. Heppelwhite is disappointed they didn't get paid, but Fall is happy that the mother blessed him and calls him "doctor". Fall wonders how medicine took since gargantuan steps without him knowing it, and finds a 2098 date on the bag's patent label.
Fall and Heppelwhite go to a homeless shelter and Fall works out the bag's medical database, and figures the bag has come from the future. He realizes it can be used to remove cancer, and calls for a homeless man, Charlie Peterson, dying of cancer. Fall tells the shelter manager, Ennis, that he found the bag, and Ennis says that he'll give the bag to the rightful owner if Fall gives it to him. Fall says that he's going to save Peterson, and uses the bag's recommended scalpel to cut out Peterson's cancer without touching the surrounding tissue.
When Ennis tries to intervene, Fall orders him out so the manager gets a policeman. Peterson tells Ennis that he has no more pain, and Fall proudly says that he's a doctor of medicine. Fall goes to the hotel where he stays, with Heppelwhite, and Fall smugly rehearses his future speech to the medical board. He tells Heppelwhite that he's going to solicit one of the most complicated cases from the medical board, and then cure the patient with the bag and says that the scalpel in the bag, if put in his neck, won't kill him. Fall will demonstrate on himself. Heppelwhite wants a part of the action, and explains that Fall will make millions of dollars from the bag while Heppelwhite gets nothing. Fall dismisses Heppelwhite's greed and says that they're going to use the bag to cure the incurable. Heppelwhite takes another scalpel out of the bag and advances on Fall.
Later, a dressed-up Heppelwhite meets with the medical society, posing as Fall. He repeats Fall's speech about embedding the scalpel in his throat and being unharmed. A doctor points out that he's be dead, and Heppelwhite rams the scalpel into his neck.
In 2098, Gillings gets an alert and tells Cosgrove that he's getting an alert that a homicide has been committed with one of the bag's instruments. Cosgrove orders Gilling to deactivate the bag.
After the "demonstration", the doctors of the society leave the room and comment on how Heppelwhite seemingly cut his own throat, and wonders why Heppelwhite didn't just kill himself at home instead of in front of them. One of the orderlies asks what to with the bag, and a doctor tells him to put it in the incinerator. The orderly does so, but first looks inside of it and discovers that the contents have self-destructed.
