The first two episodes of the fifth season pretty much wrote themselves with the revelation of Dan Quayle's disgust over Murphy Brown's single motherhood. The mix of reality and fiction becomes probably the most famous episode of the series as Murphy and the FYI crew take on the scandal over vice president Quayle's claim that Murphy is destroying the importance of fatherhood. A montage of Miles walking off the elevator with the latest scandal rag shows how Quayle's statement became a major controversy, and all that could do was create more interest in the series. References to the cultures of the time and their own moral connotations in the sense of values (a slam against Arnold Schwarzenegger and a reference to the latest "Batman" movie) also shows a ridiculousness of the vice president's claim even though Candice Bergen herself indicated that on certain aspects she agreed with him. While I'm sure the final gag had more of an impact in 1992 (based on a real life embarrassment for the vice president), today it does come off as a bit pandering, mainly because you never find out who was responsible. The group of people who appear on the show after Murphy's moving speech upon her return to FYI apparently are single parents which include single fathers as well.
