Lucky McKee's episode of the Masters of Horror series is a very fun, clever and entertaining film. Not only Sick Girl has creepy moments but it also made me laugh a lot. And unlike Deer Woman, the humor here is smart and the actors are talented, especially the two main actresses. It starts as a romantic comedy and right from the beginning you feel close to the characters, which is a very good thing considering what is about to come. A geek named Ida (Angela Bettis) is heartbroken. But she noticed a lonely girl, Misty (played by Erin Brown), who's always sitting and drawing in the hall where Ida works and she thinks it might be a good idea to ask her out. Soon Ida dates Misty and they start falling in love with each other. It's great we are spared the usual lesbian stereotypes. It doesn't even feel like we're dealing with a homosexual love story. We're only witnesses of a new born love between two lonely persons who appear to be made for each other. The problem is that, recently, some unknown person sent by mail a strange gift to Ida. Knowing she likes bugs (she has dozens of them in her apartment), someone offered her a huge unknown insect, and on the first night, without noticing it, Misty got bitten. I won't spoil anything by telling more. It takes a little while before the horrors start, but it doesn't really matter because it's never boring. Director Lucky McKee (May, The Woods) may be a new horror master but he seems to know what he's doing. Don't miss this episode. Highly recommended!
