THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. –The Napoleon's Tomb Affair – 1967

This is the 79th episode of 1964 to 1968 spy series, THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. The series ran for a total of 105 episodes. The first season was filmed in black and white with the remainder shot in colour. Robert Vaughn plays agent Napoleon Solo while David McCallum plays Illya Kuryakin. Leo G Carroll plays Mister Waverly, the boss of the secret agency known as U.N.C.L.E. (United Network Command for Law & Enforcement) UNCLE's main enemy is THRUSH, an organization out to take over the planet.

This is another less than shining episode from the disaster that was season three. Here we have Kurt Kaszner as the dictator of a small North African country. He is visiting France for a vacation. Everywhere he goes though there seems to be protests etc against him. He always thought there were good relations between France and his country. What Kaszner does not know ,is that his second in command, Joseph Sirola, is planning a coup. He has arranged for all the protests and the like. Sirola hopes to provoke Kaszner into doing something stupid. Then he will have a reason to overthrow Kaszner.

UNCLE agents Robert Vaughn and David McCallum are on hand to ensure Kaszner's visit goes off without a hitch. They soon discover the rat in the cheese cupboard. The rat is a very large one, Ted Cassidy. (known to most as Lurch in the original ADAMS FAMILY) Cassidy, a henchman of Sirola, spends his time planting various bombs and the like to dispose of the UNCLE types.

The woman in this episode, Mercedes Molinar (for once not a blonde) is used as bait by Sirola to cause Kaszner to enter a plot to steal Napoleon's Tomb.

Molinar looks like Kaszner's former wife. So on and so on. Not one of the better efforts, but by no means the worst.

Warning: Spoilers
President Nasasos Tunick ( Kurt Kasznar ), leader of a former French colony, is in Paris. A series of strange incidents leaves him embarrassed and angry; firstly, a man in a hotel lobby rebukes him for being 'bombastic', then he is heckled during a student protest, and, finally, a hotel employee - Candyce ( Mercedes Molinar giving a colourless performance ) - who resembles his late wife is kidnapped, along with Solo and Kuryakin, the men assigned to protect him.

Behind the incidents is Malanez ( Joseph Sirola ), his Number 2 man who is secretly plotting to force him out of power. Tunick snaps and decides to avenge his good name by stealing the tomb of none other than Napoleon Bonaparte...

It is hard to know what to make of this episode. Like many Season 3 tales, it is played for laughs, yet near the end tries to turn serious with the twist that Tunick's wife was murdered by Malanez. It is neither funny nor dramatic. James N.Whiton penned one of my favourite 'Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea' episodes - 'The Fossil Men' - as well as co-writing 'The Abominable Dr.Phibes' ( 1971 ) starring Vincent Price. With a really witty script this might have worked ( though I doubt it ). The effect is deadly dull.

As 'Tunick', Kasznar ( 'Fitzhugh' in Irwin Allen's 'Land Of The Giants' ) overacts so badly you expect him to take-off like a Saturn Five rocket. He had better material to work with in 'The Ambushers' ( 1967 ). Fritz Feld plays a total of four roles - a banker, a beatnik, a diplomat, and a waiter - and all fail to register. Ted Cassidy, a.k.a. 'Lurch' in the 'Addams Family' television series, sports a French accent so thick you could cut it with a knife.

At one point, Kuryakin says: "I don't like this!" and Solo replies: "Its a bit monotonous, isn't it?" and you find yourself nodding furiously in agreement.
