- Lois and Clark are assigned to cover a large boxing match in the city and find that several of the fighters seem stronger than the average mortal man. - Perry teams Lois and Clark up to cover an upcoming slate of boxing matches that will determine champions for each weight class. When the pair arrive at the gym, the fighters are not receptive to being interviewed. It is only when Allie Dinello appears, a friend from Lois's childhood, that the atmosphere is lightened. One of the fighters eggs Clark into climbing into the ring so that he can teach him what boxing is all about. This ends when the fight promoter, Max Menken, comes and escorts Lois and Clark out the door, declaring that the gym is off limits to reporters. Allie calls Lois later on and agrees to talk with her outside of the gym. When she goes to meet him, she watches as a truck deliberately runs him down. This leads the two of them to do some research into the contestants. It seems like one contender in each class has a dramatic turn-around in their boxing success. Lois's father, Dr. Sam Lane, was a physician much sought after by the gym for his sports medicine expertise. When Lois and Clark sneak into his office to check out his files, Clark's x-ray vision detects some robot-looking pieces behind a wall of books. Clark pushes on the edge of the bookcase wall, opening into a room where various bionic limbs for humans are on display. It seems that Dr. Lane has been equipping the boxers with artificial aids that impart superhuman strength to their punches. Its a ploy that is underwritten by Lex Luthor in cahoots with the gym proprietor to win all of the boxing titles in one fair swoop. This is merely a test to see if Lex could eventually assemble an army of super soldiers who would do his bidding. Max kidnaps Lois while two of the semi-cyborg boxers engage Clark. Lex is able to deflect any suspicions about himself when he rescues Lois by shooting Max. Max is no longer around to implicate him as well. Lois and Clark file their story about what was going on which cancels the fight. One fighter, Tommy, dares Superman to take him on. Clark obliges by showing up in his Superman costume. He puts him down with a flick of his finger to Tommy's forehead. Dr. Lane is not charged as he was not aware that he was part of an underhanded and illegal scheme.—Garon Smith
