- An asteroid the size of Long Island, 17 miles in diameter, is on a collision course with Earth. The US government asks for Superman's intervention to stop it so that they don't risk spreading radioactive debris from a nuclear missile intervention. Unsure of his ability to succeed with the task, Superman gives Lois s passionate kiss before departing. Superman hurls himself into space to smash it into smaller pieces. He does manage to reduce it in size but in the process loses suffers a case of amnesia. He limps back to Earth, crashing in a section of the ghetto with no clothes and no remembrance of who he is and why he is there. A street person takes pity on his naked condition, gives him some clothes, and takes him to a soup kitchen. He is eventually identified as Clark Kent with the excuse that he was hit by a car as the cause for his memory loss. Cat Grant, the Daily Planet's gossip columnist who is in love with him, decides to take advantage of the situation. She insists that the two of them are an item. Lois tries to help Clark regain his memories by taking him to his apartment. Everyone else is looking for signs that Superman survived the impact with the asteroid. Jimmy has an idea from reports of the ghetto area impact. In the crash crater he finds the S-emblem from Superman's suit. On the basis of this, Perry offers him a chance to write his first feature story. Martha and Jonathan come to Metropolis and to help Clark regain his memory. They tell him who he is and show him a set of costumes that are hanging in a hidden closet. He needs to remember how to be Superman, not knowing how to even fly. Martha pushes him off a high balcony to force the issue. He lands in a pile of boxes in the alley unhurt. Time is running short with a fragment of the asteroid that is still heading to Earth. The military is unwilling to wait any longer and launch a nuclear missile at it. It misses. In a nick of time, Clark comes to his senses and flies into space once again to stop the asteroid. This time his is completely successful. Perry polishes Jimmy's story copy.—Garon Smith
