Worth the watch!

I've seen this a few times on TV. Cleggy and Truly relate a story to their new friend, Alvin, about the 'Holiday Bug'. Alvin wafts into the scene on the air waves! It in itself is creative genius! Then they lead Alvin, who wants to make a name for himself, into the woods to seek out and photograph the great and mysterious 'Cat Creature'! As the cast plays out the scene, the audience can anticipate, but still be surprised and entertained by the way it all plays out! Alvin is seen as the 'Great White Hunter'! See for yourself as the story unfolds. It is a definite must-see!!!! In the end, you too may want to try out for a part in the 'Lair of the Cat Creature'. Miau!!!!

The Lair of the Cat Creature

Part of the fun of this show is seeing familiar faces from other sitcoms past pop up in either long-term or guest appearances.

So, in that revolving door approach, we get Brian Murphy, who instantly fits in, with some lovely dialogue and moments.

Roy Clarke was trying clearly at this point to find a new 3rd to sadly replace Compo and join Cleggy/Truly in their escapades. Tom (now relegated to a sub plot) had been tried without much impact, and I was never fully convinced that Billy (descendant of Robin Hood) was THE man to be so.

It's all very much latter 'Summer Wine' in terms of style and plot, but you can't write charm, and that drips from every scene.

Sadden by the loss of Gordon Whanby (Westly) to cancer. He is missed and can never be replaced.

The roaring dales

Roy Clarke realised he needed to refresh the lineup for Last of the Summer Wine. Replacing the important cog of Compo was no easy task, as well as the actor who played Wesley had also died the previous year.

The character of Alvin Smedley is introduced in this episode with another new character showing up in the following episode.

Alvin played by Brian Murphy literally drops from the sky as he attempts to glide to France to make a name for himself. This birdman thinks he is actually in France and amazed the locals speak English so well.

Meanwhile Tom plans to fix up Smiler with a lady. They even get advice from Ivy. Tom hopes Smiler would impress her when he uses his dog puppet, Waldo to suddenly spring up and bark.

The dog puppet comes in handy as Alvin is persuaded to go to the woods looking for the fearsome cat creature. The cast including Keith Clifford are clearly having fun on screen pretending to roar like a cat creature. Roy Clark even manages to insert a pratfall in a pub scene.

Even the two policemen are out of their panda cars, relegated to pushing bikes in this episode but Tom gives them a scare with his dog puppet.

Sadly it is clear from this episode that Thora Hird is ill and looks gaunt. She would die a few months after this episode is broadcast and she really should had been written out of the series than be allowed to appear in this state.

The first appearance of Alvin. Solid episode.

Alvin Smedley crash lands outside Howard's front door, after attempting to head to France, he strikes up an instant comradeship with Cleggy, Truelove and Billy.

It's another light hearted, casual, easy thirty minutes of sweet and innocent humour. I'm so glad that Hywel Bennett didn't become a regular, but that Brian Murphy did.

I have to admit, I was a massive fan of Brian Murphy, and I was so glad to see him join the show, I thought he was funny here, his delivery was always so effortless.

The laughs for me come from Howard and Marina once again, you can't help but chuckle at the pair.

It was a running joke that actors of a certain age would be guaranteed work on Last of The Summer wine. Sadly we recently lost Wesley and Eli, several changes were made.

7/10.

Welcome Alvin the new Barmpot
ygwerin130 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
There is an expression in Yorkshire to describe daft people that of Barmpot, this show is positively replete with barmpots.

This episode sees the introduction of yet another one Alvin, played to perfection by the great Brian Murphy. Anyone familiar with his previous TV appearances can attest to the fact that Brian Murphy can most definitely play Barmpots.

Truly may have retired from the old bill but once a copper always a copper, and he shows he hasn't lost the back of making things up as he goes along.

Truly tries to test just how much of a barmpot Alvin really is by endeavouring to convince him, of the reality of a local Legend that of the Cat Creature.

Truly then enlists the assistance of more of the local barmpots Tom and Smiler, and I have to wonder is Barry in the right job for someone so gullible?
