Love born of betrayal is better lost than lived
cranialsi5 November 2009
Warning: Spoilers
This is one of my favourite early episodes of the first season. It sets a dubious precedent that is revisited with disturbing regularity in later episodes, namely that of the Taoist priest in search of lurve!

Each flashback scene slowly informs the audience that this is to be a difficult attraction between Kwai Chang and the 'butterfly' Miss Liu. Beginning with betrayal and being framed, Kwai Chang is injured making him an easy prey to the butterfly. As Kaines injuries worsen whilst his compassion shines the 'butterfly' becomes drawn in by the monk's magnetism.

All is not roses however, what with a psychotic sheriff played by Andrew Duggan and Wong Ti played by Mako both after the monks 'hide'.

All nicely shot somewhere on the California coast.

Tina Chen, was in this episode.

She had a leading role in the "Hawaiians".

Highly recommended!

Love is harmony, even in discord
kevinolzak4 June 2024
A shocking episode in so many ways, "The Tide" kicks off with farmer Amos Houlton (Robert Donner) leading Caine to the office of Sheriff Boggs (Andrew Duggan) to lay claim to the $10,000 reward, only to earn a fatal shot to the chest from the greedy lawman. He also fires at Caine, who barely manages to escape with the aid of pretty Su Yen Lu (Tina Chen), whose father has been a political prisoner of the same despised Emperor in China. While nursing her injured charge back to health in a hidden seaside cave, Su Yen has also sent for her brother Wong Ti Lu (Mako) in San Francisco, all under the watchful eye of the suspicious sheriff. Priceless bon mots: "Deal with evil through strength but affirm the good in man through trust, in this way we are prepared for evil but we encourage good...when the body expresses the desires of the mind and the spirit, then the body is in tune with nature." And what is love? "love is harmony, even in discord." The climax is a battle for survival that cannot end well, yet Caine lives on for another day.
