Writing this review from the far future, some 40 years since it was aired. Watching the whole series again, beginning to end.
Here is a question that has long puzzled TV historians. Why did the series die? The answer is not that 3 years is a long time, look at BONANZA. A series that ran so long Lorne's son Chuck was able (in 2012) to sell Bonanza memorabilia for a hefty price..
Some think the answer is the behaviour of the star. Around the end of the second season, he developed a reputation for losing his way (in real life) and behaving in a very un-monk-like manner.
But the real reason is that the writers lost it. They just ran out of ideas.
(And BTW I am overlooking the fact, mentioned in my other reviews, that the producers were so cheap they constantly recycled the same Chinese actors in different roles through the series, hoping no one would notice. Problem is, people noticed.)
The Danny Caine arc could have been great. It has potential. Instead it is horrific. Made moreso by the character of Danny's son, written in such a way that he is either meant to be autistic or just plain "simple." Easily the most annoying character in network TV at the time, played by John Blyth Barrymore (of "the" Barrymoore clan) in such a way that you want to hurl a brick at the screen whenever he is in camera. Which is pretty much always.
Watching the end of Season 3, the end of one of the most important TV series of all time, is painful in every possible way. Terrible writing, terrible characters, Leslie Neilson before he discovered his real gift was really comedy ... just plain awful.
