Martin is reading "Let Them Eat Cake" by Marie Antoinette. She was the last queen of France and was beheaded in 1793 after the French Revolution. In the decades after the revolution all sorts of stories arose about her supposedly clueless, callous behavior. One said that her response to being told the commoners were starving because there was no bread, was to say "Let them eat cake". Actually the original anectdote was written about 'a great princess' years before Antoinette even entered France. Oh, and the original phrase was 'Let them eat brioche'.
