Is It Real or Is It....Bad Writing?
kgraovac7 November 2023
The episode title tells us the A-story is about Sonny being discovered by a record producer who wants to sign him to an exclusive five-year contract as a composer. Sonny announces his resignation and gives a farewell concert. He tells Nancy "Get away witch - this is MY night". This leads to a strange spectacle where Sonny tap-dances in a white top-hat and tails, waltzes with the girls and disappears in a puff of smoke. It plays like a fantasy sequence of an old Hollywood musical yet is supposedly real.

When Sonny goes to the record company the next day, the producer doesn't seem to recognize him. The explanation is that he just came off a 48-hour bender. HUH? So, was the fantasy sequence a hallucination experienced by the record exec and we were seeing it from HIS perspective? The whole thing is very confusing and ridiculous. Nancy ends up giving Sonny his job back - at a 20% pay cut.

The B-story here is actually funnier - it too, is convoluted, but not as much as Sonny's. A string of unsuccessful auditions has Dot questioning her career path - so she resolves to acting like the perfect waitress to impress Nancy. Reasoning is, if she can pull that off she can play ANY role. Dot goes back to her old ways though, when Nancy tells Dot she had more respect for her when she was spunky.

A very bizarre episode that would have worked better if the whole thing had been written as a dream. It does end nicely with Sonny singing "Misty" while surrounded by the girls.
