Strong episode with Alan on hilariously unromantic form
snoozejonc20 February 2021
On Valentine's Day, Alan finds himself in financial difficulty after the decision about his second series.

This is a funny episode with the usual hilarious banter and is a desperate chapter in both his professional and personal lives. He is in a difficult position with a responsibility towards a certain group of people and we seen him handle it in the worst possible way.

All of the above unfolds in a series of excruciating encounters with the hotel staff, his employees and culminates in the type of romantic evening that only Alan could have. My favourite part is when the lights go out.

I love the dialogue, which as always contains Alan's signature tactless, socially inept comments on everyone and everything.

Steve Coogan is brilliant as always and given great support by the cast.

For me it is 8.5/10 but I like to round upwards.

Warning: Spoilers
As a consequence of his sacking by the B.B.C., Alan is forced to close down his production company - Peartree Productions. One of his staff is the sexy Jill ( Julia Deakin ) whom he fancies. Unable to tell her the bad news to her face, he takes her instead on a date to an owl sanctuary and then to a special romantic evening at the hotel. After dinner, they retreat back to his room with bowls of Chocolate Mousse...

Cracking second episode, with a lovely, funny performance from Julia Deakin ( around this time, she was also to be seen in David Croft's final sitcom 'Oh Dr.Beeching!' ). It gets off to a good start with Alan promoting Terry's Chocolate Oranges on air, before handing them out to the Tavern staff to try and make himself popular, and never lets up. Some of my favourite scenes in the series feature Alan and Susan ( Barbara Durkin ) at the reception desk. Alan cannot be funny to save his life, and his attempts to flirt with her are disastrous, coming across more like insults.

Funniest moment - Alan trying to amuse Jill at the owl sanctuary by first pretending to fart and then be a ghost.

Second funniest moment - Jill recreating the notoriously steamy film '9 and A Half Weeks' with the aid of chocolate mousse. The end result looks more like a dirty protest.
