Gullible Richie. Richie's first quickening. An immortal I feel didn't need to die. Some more of Mac's career-history is shown.

Warning: Spoilers
Richie brings home a frightened woman, Laura, who was running from an immortal, Mako. Mac knows who Mako is. He's always been a figure of authority, such as a sheriff.

So here we have Richie bringing home another friend. I'm disappointed that they chose to make Richie so gullible. He was a street kid and you would think he'd be more suspicious. You don't need to live 400 years to have street smarts.

In the flashback in the old west, we see that Mac was a newspaperman working at 'The North West Ledger.' His friend, Tim, living a few years in town is wanted by authorities, and Mako is on his trail. We find out that Mac and Mako knew each from before when Mako was a sheriff in England, as he points out that Mac and Fitz could barely read the last time he saw them. I wonder if they were planning on bringing Mako back for another episode but never got around to it? Later Mako kills Tim in an old west shootout.

Interesting shower curtain you have there Richie.

Mako tells Mac he is just doing his job. Later Mac finds out from Joe that Laura is wanted for the murder of her husband. She says her husband attacked her and she killed him. Laura keeps changing her story without batting an eye. Mac tries to talk some sense into Richie saying that Laura needs to turn herself in and he would get a lawyer for her. She doesn't want to and she and Richie go on the run.

Mako hires a couple of thugs to run interference with Mac while he tracks Laura and Richie. Mac says he could just call the police. Mako says no, that he is the law. Mac tells him that he was acting outside of the law by hiring the two thugs.

Richie was kind of stupid to go on the run WITH her. As Mako can track him. Later Richie finally realizes that they can't run anymore and tries to talk Laura into turning herself in. She is pleading with him and refusing to go. I think they struggle a little. She runs out on the street. Mako who was chasing them hits Laura and kills her. From what I saw he DID put on the breaks. However, Richies is furious and goes after him with a sword.

In the fight, Mako jumps and gets caught into a wooden floor unable to move. Richie takes his head and has his first quickening. Great job by Stan Kirsch who looks stunned after he took Mako's head.

Later a teary-eyed Mac tells Richie he needs to go. Richie says: "it's that time?" and Mac nods. There's a lot of speculation about what this means by fans. Some think Mac told him once he joined "the game" he would have to leave. Some think that this is the point where Mac has taught him everything he needs to know and it was time for him to leave the nest in their father and son relationship. I don't know what to think. It wasn't like Richie was living there with him. Mac is also in "the game." Mac has hung out with other immortals all the time throughout his life, Connor, Fitz, Amanda, many many more, so it's not like it's a they-need-to-keep-separate-from-other-immortals thing. Later in this season, Richie is back hanging with Mac anyway. So it just struck me as stupid and unneeded. I wonder if it was something behind the scenes and maybe Stan Kirsch was thinking about leaving the show? So the writers wrote it this way. This is just speculation on my part.

What about Mako? Mako didn't seem evil to me. He seemed a bit over-zealous in his role as a lawman, but not evil. I don't believe he killed Laura on purpose. He put on his breaks. She ran out onto the street. Mac asks Mako why doesn't he call the local police to bring Laura in? Why didn't Mac call the police? In fact, this whole thing could have been avoided if Mac had done that. Richie would have been furious, but if the lawyer Mac hired helped her then that would have smoothed itself out. Mac and Richie were willing to help Laura. I think she was still lying about what happened and that's why she was adamant about not turning herself in. I feel like Mako didn't need to die, but the writers really wanted Richie to take his first head, so...

I gave the episode an 8/10.
