The mortician was a scene-stealer and the best thing about this episode. Mixed messages about ideology turned me off.

Warning: Spoilers
Duncan's old friend, Paul Karros, an immortal, shows up. He the leader of a group of revolutionaries that are trying to obtain arms and get the US to drop the arms embargo.

I felt like this episode was sending mixed messages about ideology. Especially from Duncan. Being slaves and/or being oppressed is better than being dead or being free? People shouldn't fight for freedom because they might die? Nobody wants to die, but throughout history people have died for freedom. Duncan seems to be saying it would have been better that people stayed oppressed or stayed as slaves because at least they would be alive. Duncan: "I think the noblest thing a man can do is live." Dear Duncan, if you are a slave or are being oppressed, you are not living. I just thought he sounded stupid at times in this episode. I mean what the hell was he doing in WWII then? What the hell was he doing in the Civil War?

The mortician was a scene-stealer. In fact, he was probably the best thing about this episode. I wish he had been back in more episodes. He was hilarious.

Charlie leaves to go off and help Mara in her cause. I like Charlie but have always found him too nosy. But I'm glad they gave the guy a romance.

I wonder if they toyed with the idea of instead of Paul Karros, they would make it Spartacus instead. That Spartacus was an immortal? Given that they brought him up as a friend of Paul's. That was Paul's first revolution. Anyway, that might have been interesting if they did do that.

A new regular is introduce, Anne, a doctor. She is going to be Duncan's new love interest in this season. The problem is she and Duncan have zero chemistry and their romance feels so forced. There's nothing wrong with the actress. She's a good actress. But the pairing was all wrong.

Anyway, an A to B episode, Paul is evil, must be stopped by Duncan and yadda, yadda, yadda. I gave the episode a 7/10.
