The Power of One Immortal

Warning: Spoilers
1. Among all of these stories of immortals in the Highlander TV series, this one entitled Little Tin God, was written by Richard Gilbert-Hill and it is a gem. In previous episodes we've seen some immortals who lived their lives to do good in the world of mortals. Darius the priest, Grace Chandel the physician ("Saving Grace") and Sean Burns the psychologist ("Deliverance") are three examples. At the other end of the spectrum we see immortals who view mortals as being worthless and very expendable. Alexei Voshin who betrayed all the passengers on his ship The Sea Witch, The murderous Xavier St Cloud, and Kuyler the assassin. 2. In "Little Tin God" actor Andrew Divoff turns in a chilling performance as power hungry immortal Gavriel Larca. In flashback Duncan finds Larca wrecking havock throughout the society of the Moche Indians of Peru. Larca has lived among them for 300 years and he allows them to call him God. He has become addicted to being idolized and these people have in reality become his slaves. He tells Duncan that it's really a symbiotic relationship as he provides them with protection. 3. I must pause and say that Larca's favorite eye candy in the village, a woman named Coyantu, is one of the most exotic creatures in all of Highlander. 4. Eventually Larca's people turn against him and Duncan barely escapes the village with his life. 5. In present day Larca chooses smaller groups of followers, pre immortals who he finds and kills to kick start their immortality. As they revive he tells them that he is God, that he brought them back to life and so they are ready to obey his commands. Larca blames MacLeod for causing his Moche empire to crumble and he orders the young immortals to gang up on Mac, 3 against 1, to take his head. 6. Derek, one of the young immortals recruited by Larca, becomes so confused about these events that he returns to the only place of comfort that he knows, his church. There he is seen to be alive by Reverend Bell who had witnessed Larca shooting and killing Derek. Duncan trys to explain to Derek about immortality and that Larca is not God. Derek runs away leaving Duncan no choice but to explain everything to Reverand Bell. Duncan and the Reverand head to Joe Dawson's bar. 7. Derek eventually helps Duncan who puts an end to Larca. Larca had broken too many of the rules of the immortals. 8. I enjoyed the conversation between Duncan, Joe and the rev. I also thought it was a nice touch of the story where Joe has arranged for Derek to be the student of immortal Carl Robinson, and for Reverand Bell to become a watcher for Derek. 9. It was very interesting to hear Duncan and Joe talking about what might happen if immortals knowingly broke the rule about no fighting on Holy Ground (even Larca obeyed that rule, but for his own selfish purposes). Joe spoke of a legend of two immortals who had fought in a temple in Pompeii, and it was believed that their breaking the Holy Ground rule was possibly the cause of the volcano's eruption. An intriguing part of the Highlander mythology. It was also interesting to hear Duncan talk a little about faith. 10. I rated this episode a 10 out of 10. The writing is the best of any episode. It takes a hard look at the damage one immortal can cause among people. Immortals are not Gods, and they probably do not deserve to be called "Princes of the Universe". Like mortals, immortals choose how they live their lives and how they affect those around them.
