Amanda's immortal origins told. I really liked her here. This was her story, but the writers wouldn't let her win and instead gave it to Duncan. Just seemed so sexist to me.

Warning: Spoilers
Immortal, Luther believes a set of crystals when put together will give invincibility. In other words, no one will be able to behead him. Amanda's old teacher, Rebecca, gave one crystal to each of her students. Luther has killed her and taken her crystal and is now after the rest including the one Amanda has.

John was kind of an idiot, wasn't he? He basically got Rebecca killed. He wouldn't move out of the way. If he had, Rebecca might still be alive.

Why did Duncan say this line: "Look, you're the last one of Rebecca's students left alive. If Luther took her head, then he's good." Rebecca laid down her sword and let herself be beheaded in order to save her idiot boyfriend, John, who wouldn't get out of the way. Because he didn't move, which he had lots of time to do, Luther was able to grab him and hold a sword to his neck. I know Amanda left out the part of who killed Rebecca, but later he found out. You'd think if he still didn't know, Amanda would have countered this argument. Maybe John didn't tell her the truth? That he got Rebecca killed by not moving out of the way? Hmmmn....

I found Amanda very likable in this episode. I was glad to see a flashback of her and how she first became immortal and met Rebecca. Later I enjoyed the flashback of Duncan, Amanda, and Rebecca. The three of them were funny. I'm glad they finally gave her some layers so that we can understand her better.

Luther, you're already immortal, why do you need this? Go away and self-flagellate dude.

I agree with Amanda. This was her fight. Her teacher. Her story. It should have been her to fight Luther and win. But no. The writers just couldn't let a female character have that. They had to make Amanda not a good fighter and let Duncan have the battle and win. Seemed so sexist to me and ruined the flow of Amanda's story. It would have been poetic for her to win.

I enjoyed Maurice and Amanda's scenes together.

I gave the episode an 8/10.

What a waste

Warning: Spoilers
I have always hated the beginning of this episode where we see beautiful, vibrant immortal Rebecca lay down her sword, allowing Luther to take her head, so that Luther would spare the life of John, her old gray-headed husband or boyfriend or whatever he was. I mean, how many more years would would John have lived? Possibly 15 years, 20 years max. Rebecca knew that she would beat Luther in a fight, (Luther knew it too), and John should not have been so selfish and such a coward when the moment came. In Highlander we see other examples of immortals who have mortal spouses or significant others and it never seems to end well for them. In my opinion the immortals should never sacrifice themselves for a mortal because the immortals have so much potential and too much to loose. Sure, "There can only be one", but the immortals need to make smart choices along the way, even choices which are painful. Even though the situation never came up for Duncan, I don't believe he would have ever sacrificed himself even for beautiful Tessa. I was glad that Duncan put an end to Luther, but I agree with another reviewer that Amanda should have been the one to do so. It would have been a great victory for Amanda to be able to avenge her mentor.

I don't get all the Amanda Love
max_vale29 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
So, I caught a handful of episodes of this show way back int eh 90s and recently rediscovered it on Tubi and am making my way through the show....

I just saw this episode and while I thought it was decent, I honestly do NOT get all the love the Amanda character gets. I also do NOT find her this 'gorgeous, super-sexy!' character people keep mentioning. To me, she's a cute toothpick.....but she's incredibly un-athletic and seems to just always resort to going to Duncan to solve her problems....

Obviously, this is mostly the fault of the writers; but THIS lady is supposed to be what....over a thousand years old at this point and it certainly comes across as if she's learned NOTHING in all that time and can't fight worth a &&^% with a sword either......pretty much strains the credibility....

I really liked the Rebecca character....shame she buys it so quickly. The actress who played her looked like she knew how to swing a sword. I'm also rather annoyed this season with how fast they just keep throwing Duncan into relationship with woman after woman RIGHT AFTER TESSA DIES!

I mean, I'm not saying he shouldn't find love again, he's 400 years old.....that's a given....but JEEZ! No mourning period at all?

Anyway, I also liked the guy who played Luther....a more interesting 'villain of the week' than most. I also REALLY hope we finally come across a character who's much better with a sword than Duncan.... I get he's the hero, but man....the 'Mary Sue-ness' of the character is kinda annoying....

Finally, the timing/placement of Amanda's 'birth' as an Immortal is all wrong.....first off, it should be in England with the accents and the name 'Rebecca Horne'.....not some castle whose ruins are somewhere near Paris. Also it should be something more like the 1300s or 1400s, NOT 800 something. In the 800s they wouldn't really have last names nor have that kind of Feudal set up quite yet....

Still, not a terrible episode....just again....the Amanda character just doesn't do much for me...but apparently I'm the only one. :)
