Flashback to when Tessa and Duncan first met. Kuyler the mime. Bad monotone dubbing for the French actors.
reb-warrior2 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
In the previous episode, 'Band of Brothers,' Tessa says to Duncan that Paris is their city. In this episode, Duncan has a flashback of when he and Tessa first met in Paris. He is running away from the police when he jumps on a tour boat she is the host of. They are cute right from the beginning. Chemistry right away.

Richie and the statue stuff was funny, especially since Tessa broke it.

The villain Kuyler made a pretty good antagonist. Duncan uses his detective skills to track him down. You'll often see Duncan figure out what the villain likes such as absinthe, rare caviar, an expensive car, etc, in order to track them down. Notice in future episodes his expressions as he makes these observances. Kuyler's MO is to wear make-up and acts as a mime or magician to get his victims to let their guard down. He's an assassin. He kills a friend of Duncan's a couple hundred years earlier. It so happens he along with his assassin gang kill three judges in different areas and Duncan happens to be a witness at one of the crime scenes. He puts it together that it's Kuyler given the mime get-up.

Detective Lebrun plays another seemingly angry at Duncan cop. I suppose in his case he's got a reason as he remembers Duncan running away from all those years before, tho Duncan denies it was him.

In the French episodes, most of the French actors are dubbed. It's very badly done and makes the actor seem like he/she is a bad actor, when in fact they may be fine. The dubbing sounds very monotone with no expressions of emotions. Detective Lebrun is one of the dubbed. Keep this in mind for other French actors in future episodes. I wish they didn't dub them and we could hear them naturally. I understand Tessa perfectly fine.

I didn't find this episode especially special. But it wasn't bad at all except for the dubbing. I gave it a 7/10.

found this epi cute... Warning: Spoilers
Paris, never been but can imagine...maybe someday, as even when they say in the commentary that its cold, well still want to see. The flashes to the past, even though the Canadian shoots do as well as they can Paris has that extra rich history. This cute because well, Richie and that "art head" (shuddering, but to each their own) getting it there from the flee market, what must they think on the metro...he really thinks he is getting them something "great", and the cute meet of Tess for the 1st time, Love it!!!

Re meeting the cop from the day he first met Tess, almost feel for him, he does remember Mac after a bit, to only discover his friend/partner has betrayed not just him but everyone and to have his arm badly mangled...Interesting thing its the same Immortal from 12 yrs ago, just thought it was an interesting bit on the writers part to have the same cop almost run him down as he gets away from the other Immortal Kuyler for the moment and runs and jumps onto the boat with Tess.

Bragging about how many mortals he has killed, Kuyler no soul to threaten children, as Tess pointed out, Mac knew he would order his man/men to shoot, Mac did the only thing he could backed down. Mac also knew and pointed out that someone in the police is on Kuyler payroll. Also a bit interesting Kuyler as far as I can see never has told his men about his immortality.

Well Mac and Kuyler fight about the same time that the good cop, LeBurn was confronting his partner about being "dirty" after checking himself out of the hospital. LeBrun "finds" Kuyler, confronts Mac who looks like hes been home all evening/night, and Tess's "you wouldn't want me to lie would you" as an answer to his question/statement that he supposes that Mac was at home with her all evening/night.

Poor Richie, his "gift" was "accidentally" (or not ?) broken as she hated the "head" so might of been subconsciously not so accidental ???

Great epi full of humor, romance, and just enough action to make it fun watching

Some creepy moments but slightly ordinary
skteosk4 May 2024
As the episode begins, we see a trio of mimes carry out acts of cartoon violence...before really killing someone. Duncan witnesses one of the killings and quickly concludes that they're the work of Kuyler, an Immortal assassin who uses clownish behaviour to get his victims to let their guards down.

There's a couple of nice elements to this. The flashback to Duncan and Kuyler's first meeting has a rather creepy Masonic handshake moment as they face off. We get another flashback, to Duncan and Tessa's first meeting, although it involves yet another case of Duncan facing an evil Immortal during his supposed century off from the Game. (He doesn't have a sword though, which is a nice touch.) And the show finally works out that they can have Duncan interact with the villain on holy ground rather than them fighting whenever they meet.

But essentially it's just your standard season one plot of a bad guy Immortal and an obstructive and rather clueless police investigation. (There's also a subplot about Richie buying Tessa a bust of Napoleon, which fizzles out halfway through.) First appearance of Inspector LeBrun, who'll be back next episode. While he's more suspicious of MacLeod than seems reasonable, by the end he's largely pieced everything together but apparently decided not to try and prove it.

Kuyler's base, filled with mannequins that match his whiteface appearance, is suitably creepy, although the real henchmen among the mannequins are easily spotted during the first scene there.

First appearance of Duncan's barge, which I'm not sure is ever this big again! Both Darius and Sergeant Bennett get mentions. (Yes, he's a sergeant again this episode.) The wonderful character actor Vernon Dobtcheff has a nice small role as a liqueur store owner.
