Mac is sweet helping a grieving mother. Exploitative make-out scene. A flashback that perhaps helps understand to Mac better.

Warning: Spoilers
Mac runs into an immortal, Gallen played by Roddy Piper from wrestling fame. They fight but then Gallen takes off and runs down a mortal, Tommy right in front of Mac. Mac goes to Tommy's funeral where he meets Betty, Tommy's mother. She asks him if it was really accident since Tommy, a reporter, was acting strangely in the days prior.

One of the things I love about this episode is Mac's kindness towards Betty. He is so sweet and caring towards her and offers to help her find out more.

This episode has a flashback back in history sometime in England. Mac is fooling around with a female, Bess, and gets caught by a man, Ned, demanding a duel. The man is the girl's fiance, tho Mac didn't know she was engaged. They start fighting and Bess gets too close and Ned ends up stabbing her and killing her. Later at her funeral, Bess' mother is furious with Mac and blames him for her daughter's death. Ned is in chains and will likely be hanged. I think this event had a profound impact on Mac's carefulness with mortals and his protective instinct towards them that we see throughout the series. As an immortal, he figures immortals get lots of chances, but mortals only have the one.

The people Tommy worked for Suzanne and her father, Honniger who both say they don't know what Tommy was working on. It turns out Suzanne hired Gallen to kill her father. And Honniger hired Tommy to find out who the hitman is and kill him. So Tommy isn't really a reporter. He just tells his mother that. He is, in fact, a hitman and was killed by Gallen deliberately as they became aware of the plan. I'm glad Mac let Betty believe in the end that her son was a reporter and wasn't a hitman. Betty was so kind, I wish she had been back for another episode.

The fight with Gallen and Mac at the end was really good. Did anyone else get a laugh out of Mac saying: "come, come," to the quickening? I loved that Richie helped Mac figure some things out about Tommy. I didn't like the make-out scene between Gallen and Suzanne. It was a bit too long with the camera angling down Suzanne's thigh with a close-up and didn't give me a really good impression of the director. It seemed exploitative to me rather than art. I gave the episode a 7/10.
