Jack Boult & second wife (the first died) Harriet live in London with his two kids, one of whom (Freddy - short for Frederica) has very bad asthma. Jack used to be a racing driver but now works in sales for a Japanese owned company. Harriet, a former nurse, is less than impressed by the treatment Freddy gets from the various medics she has to see for her asthma & longs to live in the country. As does Freddy, who is mad about horses (like so many young girls).
An inherited country house allows them all to move & begin a fairytale existence, complete with a local Lady of the Manor & rural labour that pops off every five minutes to do the milking or clamp silage.
The portrayal of the Japanese company manager is definitely a stereotype & probably even on the casually racist side for modern taste. Fortunately he's only in this first episode.
As with all first episodes, this is setting up the premise, but it's an excellent introduction.
