FOR THE PEOPLE "Dangerous to the Public Peace and Safety" 1965
FOR THE PEOPLE, was an American legal drama that aired for 13 episodes during 1965. The series follows the daily grind of a New York City Assistant District Attorney. The lead is played by William Shatner with a 24 year old Jessica Walter as his wife. Howard Da Silva plays Shatner's boss while Lonny Chapman plays an investigator for the D.A.'s office. This episode is the 7th of the production run.
This one starts with a woman getting knifed to death on a crowded subway car. All the viewer sees is a man with a tattoo of a panther on his arm. The Police and the D.A. are hot under the collar over this latest murder. It is the 4th in a month with the same m.o.
This time they luck out and get a fingerprint match. It seems the murderer had dropped his knife in his haste. It turns out that the suspect, Tony Bill, had been sent up for 6 months by DA William Shatner. Shatner goes over the records of that case and sees that the man was a tad loose in the noggin.
The Police, now that they have a suspect pull out all the stops. They hit up the man's mother, parole officer and the like for a possible location. No luck. Bill is holed up in a small fleabag busy talking to himself.
In the mix here is a 19 year old Lesley Ann Warren as young girl who has fallen for Bill. Shatner's wife, Jessica Walter is drawn into the case when Bill pays the woman a visit. Is he looking for revenge on Shatner? Needless to say this is going to end with someone else dead.
The director here is Stuart Rosenberg. Rosenberg started out in television before graduating to feature work. His big screen work includes, "Brubaker", "The Laughing Policeman", "The Drowning Pool", "Murder Inc" and "Cool Hand Luke".
