- TriviaStar Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982) was filmed while this episode was also being filmed. This kept Ricardo Montalban very busy.
- GoofsWhen Misty Rowe and George Maharis are in the trench, at the end, the lava that starts pouring looks like pizza sauce colored paint.
Featured review
Oh, the idiotic things actors had to act in this silly show! (Poor Susan & wooden Lyle!)
I was initially delighted by the presence of seasoned actress, Susan Sullivan, and the ever handsome Lyle Waggoner, alias Major Trevor from Wonder Woman. Alas, this is another one that falls short. What a dumb story they gave those two! Capitalizing on the bionic men/woman franchise, Lyle is turned into a robot. The weirdest scene is when Susan Sullivan, point blank, asks him to kiss her. And him, looking like he'd rather be somewhere else. Didn't Lyle Waggonner ALWAYS look awkward and plays his parts a bit wooden?
He is looking a lot more aged here than on Wonder Woman. Must be the white sideburns. Oh and his skin is way too dark and looks silly! (In fact so does that of all the White actors, and the actress playing the bimbo.) They are all as badly baked as "Mr. Tan" himself, somebody Hamilton. (I already forgot his first name. Alfredo? Roberto? Maximillian? George... is it? Naaah!) Well, anyway! So, without giving you the storylines (that's what the outline page is for, folks, this is reviews, aka viewers opinion, nothing more!) I'll say the other story was even more idiotic than this one.
There's a few dudes in a room watching a volcano. Why? I haven't the faintest idea. And there's the platinum blonde bimbo. Oh boy! I don't know what's worse. Maharis lack of charisma and wooden acting (in between his angry miens) or the bimbo taking herself for Marilyn Monroe and doing the whole "little girl voice" and all. This is the 3rd time I've seen her on F. I. In fact, just yesterday, she was trying to absorb Mr. Roarke's mouth into hers in Tattoo, The Matchmaker. The first time I'd seen her, she comes out of a cake (I think) and tries to suck face with David Cassidy (or someone like him).
Believe it or not, she's actually not the most annoying actress to ever disembark on F. I. but this character takes the cake in being annoying, though this ageing actress isn't exactly annoying herself. (What was she? 47 when she starred here?) She does wear a lovely pink and white dress with ruffles on bias and tries her best to act cute, so we'll give her that. But the story is a dud and a bore.
Back to Susan Sullivan. I have always liked her, she is so classy the way her hair is coiffed, and the way she looks at people and moves. Kitty Montgomery of Dharma & Greg, and beyond that, the scientist (I think) in the pilot for The Incredible Hulk. (Didn't she also appear in Rich Man, Poor Man? Must be where I first saw her.) Anyway, she is wasted here: her story is pitiful, the story static, and did I mention the acting from Lyle is wooden? He always looked like he'd rather be somewhere else rather than have to kiss these lovely ladies. (Now, why is that?!)
But the volcano story is even more static, and has more of a play "feel" to it. The set decors have changed as of Season Five: no more bungalow interiors (did they demolish those?) but we see, by the bizarre lighting and shadows, that the outdoors is really filmed indoors.
And what was up with gold bars falling into lava downstream but upstream turning the lava metallic gold? LOL! Well anyway. Yet another boring episode, which I have to rate way too high, cos there's even worse to be seen on F. I. (namely the last 2 dreadful seasons!) It's a toss up as to who was more boring: Martin Milner, Peter Graves (YIKES) or Lyle Waggoner. At least, the later was handsome, though he fails to project that quality here.
Oh and 1 more thing: I watched this on GET TV and it made no sense. They cut off so much for those commercials for oil from green lipped mussels, LOL! Watched it on Tubi, there's a lot more beautiful images. They do repeat the one shot of the sea by moonlight, but they have tons of new establishing shots of the island here. Not much Tattoo at all (just intro and outro) and no disguised Mr Roarke here. Just a oh hum episode with 2 boring segments and not much else.
Now! If somebody could explain to me why they have to turn around at the end and wave to each other when they just said their goodbyes barely 2 seconds and 3 steps ago? It baffles the mind! Six/Ten because I like Susan Sullivan a great deal.
