"They weren't supposed to go OUT!" - Robert
PudgyPandaMan29 August 2008
Warning: Spoilers
This episode is from Season 7 of "Everybody Loves Raymond" and originally aired in March 2003. I think this is one of my favorite episodes. The basic premise is that Robert intentionally screws up his and Amy's wedding invitation so as to be excused from having to help with wedding preparations - with hilarious results along the way.

It starts with Robert stopping by Ray's house asking for his help in composing their wedding invitation. Ray proceeds to tell him that women don't really want the man's help, they just ask them so they feel involved. He says women have dreamed about the day since they were 12 and we should help them by letting them make all the decisions that they really want to make in the first place. Ray suggests that Robert do a horrible job of the initial invitation draft. Amy will hate it and re-do the invitation. Robert agrees.

Fast forward to a few weeks later when Robert is talking to Debra in her living room. In bursts Amy holding a invitation, and the expression on her face is priceless. She can hardly speak and tells Robert she just got the invitation. He thinks she just got a copy - then she tells him it came through the mail. Robert freaks out and says "It wasn't supposed to go out". She says "What did you do Robert?" Its hard to believe sweet natured Amy could be so angry. Again, Robert says "It wasn't supposed to go out". She proceeds to read it and it starts off: "Hank 'n' Pat request the honor of your PRESENTS.... attire optional.." and it goes on to give the wrong date. And Amy screams, "So, people are going to show at church... on the wrong day... NAKED!" Robert is beside himself and repeats again, this time in a hoarse plea, "They weren't supposed to go out." They question him as to what he was thinking, and he let's out of the bag what Ray had said. He said the lady was only supposed to print a draft and NOT mail them out. Debra is furious. Marie shows up at the front door with her invitation in hand and screams "Oh my God!". They all leave to do damage control.

Meanwhile, Ray comes home in a good mood with the mail in hand. Debra asks him to see if Robert and Amy's invitation came. He opens it and reads it. He realizes the wrong one went out, but doesn't want Debra to see. She asks to see it and he "accidentally" spills drink on it. He starts to throw it out but she wants to see it. He says he'll dry it off and takes it to the gas stove and dries it close enough so that it will catch fire. He then throws it in the sink and crams it down the disposal and shreds it to pieces and says "Oh darn".

Debra tells him she's already seen it and knows what he did. She continues to tear into him in classic Debra style. She gets him to admit he did it on purpose so Amy would plan the rest of the wedding. Debra then realizes he did this to her on their wedding. She yells "Zipper the one man wedding band" - you picked him so I would hate it and you wouldn't have to help me". Then she wants to know what else he has faked incompetence at so he wouldn't have to do it. Like folding laundry, making the bed and changing the kids diapers. Their argument is hilarious as Debra gets angrier and angrier as she realizes more and more things he has gotten out of doing in their marriage.

Robert is seen having to trail Amy or Marie around helping with the rest of the wedding chores, like helping show Debra the different bridesmaid dresses to pick from.

This episode is extremely funny as Robert makes the ultimate wedding planning mistake and lets extremely defective invitations get mailed out. Ray & Debra's argument is one of the best from the whole series if you ask me. Debra's acting is so convincing without being over the top. This is a must see!

Warning: Spoilers
I would say that out of 210 episodes of everybody loves Raymond this one should be rated right at the top of the very best. Raymond Frank and Robert have created a ruse in order to make Amy think that he is too much of an idiot to have any responsibility in planning their their wedding. Well unfortunately the invitation printer lady messed up and mailed out the invitations as-is. She was supposed to give Amy a copy of it first in order to get her final approval but she did not.

Amy Had to try to fix the mistake that the men made, while the men had to do you all the house cleaning chores in atonement for their devious scheme.

Do not miss this episode!
