Loved animation as a child, with particularly important components to me were the animation, characters and the music. As an older person, a young adult but a child at heart (cliched as that sounds), actually love animation even more while also in some cases being more critical of it, more components were noticeable, with more knowledge was garnered of behind the scenes and of the different studios, animation styles and those involved.
Always did consider 'Ducktales' a personal favourite. Now it is another strong case of loving it even more it even more and that is very high praise when some past favourites are far from it now. By today's standards, it is funnier, even more entertaining finding even more to like and from getting much more the references, humour and dialogue, not admittedly always the case when younger. That has been the case with many animated shows re-visited recently, with prime examples being 'Animaniacs', 'Pinky and the Brain' and 'Tiny Toon Adventures'.
"Double-O-Duck" is one of my favourite 'Ducktales' episodes. It is one of the most entertaining episodes, as well as one of the cleverest and most creative. Story-wise, it does stand out with it having a unique edge and it does a remarkably good job putting a usually comic relief character in a serious situation, where one worries as to whether he would gel but luckily he does.
The animation as expected is very vibrant, fluid, clean and the attention to detail in the backgrounds is also note-worthy. One of my main reasons for loving the show has always been the music, the score is dynamic, beautifully orchestrated, never jarring with the action and full of energy. Disney had many theme songs that were difficult to resist and were very catchy to the extent one doesn't forget them, and that for 'Ducktales' to me was one of the best.
The writing is extremely funny with lots of witty dialogue and some really clever and surprisingly fresh references that were not hard at all to get. Quantity-wise, "Double-O-Duck" doesn't go too crazy on them either and the comedy centering around Launchpad's clueless is humorously done and integrated well into the mission itself without going overboard or annoying, the New Delhi part is a standout. Right from the suspenseful opening, the story is consistently engaging, with lots of thrills, surprising suspense and some very imaginative gadgets. The spy set-up is very neatly done and doesn't become over-stuffed or confused, while also not going too far on the simplicity either.
Have always liked Launchpad and he is here very amusing and likeable, it is very easy to root for even if the innocence is never in doubt. He interacts brilliantly with Scrooge, also on top form, and it was great that the episode doesn't spend too long on Launchpad's cluelessness to his situation and sees plenty of charm and entertainment in the interaction between the two. The supporting characters are no less colourful or memorable. The voice acting is fautless, top marks going to Terence McGovern and Rene Auberjonois having great fun as Nogood.
Overall, wonderful and one of my favourite 'Ducktales' episodes. 10/10 Bethany Cox
