- A deaf child is brought into the hospital after accidentally swallowing poison. After his recovery, it is discovered that his deafness is treatable, but his overprotective mother refuses to allow the surgery which could cure him.
- A woman walks into a hospital carrying a small boy. It's discovered that the boy has accidentally digested rat poison. The mother says she never leaves the boy alone, than says she was only leaving the house for 20 minutes to get some milk. The doctors and nurses make her feel like a negligent mother. She's not.
They diagnose the cause of the boy's illness and give him an antidote. The boy still needs to recuperate and must stay in the hospital for a few more days. That's when the mother says she needs to stay with the boy because he is deaf.
Dr. Kildare has taken a special interest in the boy's case. In the staff meeting Dr. Gillespe criticizes doctors who get emotionally involved. He says, "these cold corridors are best when we apply science to our problems" and emotion should not be our guide.
The boy has a chance of having his hearing returned surgically. The mother does not want false hopes as she saw with her brother growing up. Dr. Gillespe approaches the mother and tries to talk her into a surgery. She says "you have only logic and no emotion, and I have emotion without logic, I'm doing what I think is best".
The boy disappears. Dr. Gillespe lets his emotion out and desperately wants to find the boy. He realizes that the world needs both logic and emotion.
The mother submits to the surgery. She realizes that logic and reason can be useful.
