A Different World was the first prime-time network television show to regularly feature hip-hop music. Music Supervisor Stephen Elvis Smith argued with Bill Cosby that hip-hop reflected an upcoming trend in music. Cosby felt it was degrading to African Americans. The first season soundtrack also included reggae and music recorded in Soweto, South Africa.
