- Retired entrepreneur Pal Miclean is found dead, his face shot to pulp with a rifle apparently operated by a string tied to his toe, in a room locked from the outside of his former, now uninhabited residence. Dalziel, who is gobbling sweets while trying to stop smoking and was a close friend, promises the widow Key -separated since 5 years, after abuse, now running a catering firm with his daughter Clare- to spare her a scandal, but Pal's son Rob, a lush, insists it's murder: he had an appointment with his dad that morning, and makes public Pal's plans to change his will, disinheriting Key and making Clare's share dependent on divorcing nurse Jason Chapman. Pascoe is kept in the dark but suspects the dealings of Pal's former firm's buyer, influential contractor Bill Walker, may be the key...—KGF Vissers
- Det. Supt. Andy Dalziel and DI Peter Pascoe find themselves investigating the apparent suicide of businessman Pal Miclean who is found in a locked room in his home, which had been closed for some time. The case stirs a variety of emotions since the victim was married to one of Andy's old flames, Kay. The victim was not very well liked. Kay had left him long ago; his daughter was to be cut out of his will; and his son is a heavy drinker who is convinced Kay is the killer. When an ex-copper, now a private detective, called Griffin is found dead the police have another link to the Miclean family and also to events from 20 years ago when Griffin investigated a burglary and assault on Kay Miclean. All the while, Andy has given up smoking.—garykmcd
