- Alex Ward: [in restaurant] It's been good being with you here, Pam. Not... precisely what I'd hoped for, but still... I'm sorry It's over. Well, almost over.
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: It's been nice being here.
- Alex Ward: But you're anxious to go back to your husband.
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: Well, I don't know if Bobby's gonna be there. He's so wrapped up in this solar energy thing, I don't know when I'll see him.
- Alex Ward: Most wives would say that with at least a touch of bitterness. You didn't.
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: Well, I'm not bitter.
- Alex Ward: Aren't most neglected wives bitter?
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: I'm not like most wives.
- Alex Ward: You're not like any other woman.
- [places his hand over hers]
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: Alex, Bobby doesn't mean to neglect me. It's just, he gets so wrapped up in other things.
- Alex Ward: But he does neglect you.
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: Occasionally.
- Alex Ward: Then he's a fool. Occasionally.
- Lucy Ewing Cooper: How about some more coffee, Afton?
- Afton Cooper: Oh, no, thank you. I'm gonna have to be leaving soon. I sing my first set at the club at nine.
- Lucy Ewing Cooper: How about you, Arliss?
- Arliss Cooper: Well, just a little bit. Thank you, Lucy.
- Lucy Ewing Cooper: There you go.
- [to Afton:]
- Lucy Ewing Cooper: If Mitch ever gets a night off, we'd love to come and see you.
- Arliss Cooper: [proudly] Afton has a lovely voice. And we're both so grateful to your Uncle J.R. for all that he's done for her. You know, he really has started her on a singing career.
- Lucy Ewing Cooper: [ironic chuckle] Well, leave it to J.R. to discover new talent.
- Afton Cooper: [holds her own] Yes, and I'm very grateful to him.
- Lucy Ewing Cooper: I'm sure you are.
- Arliss Cooper: I just cannot get over that dinner, Lucy. I just wish that Mitch could have been here to share it with us. He works so hard, that poor boy.
- Afton Cooper: Oh, now, Mama, no one married to a Ewing can be called 'poor.'
- [Arliss shames herself for her daughter]
- Lucy Ewing Cooper: Mitch has very definite ideas about accepting help from the Ewings. Or from anybody else, for that matter. Of course, I don't have to tell you about his pride. Or how much he cares.
- Afton Cooper: Cares? I don't understand.
- [shakes her head]
- Lucy Ewing Cooper: About your mama and you.
- Afton Cooper: And me?
- Lucy Ewing Cooper: Well, Dallas is a big city. And not at all like... Biloxi, wasn't it?
- Afton Cooper: Mm.
- Arliss Cooper: Oh, Afton was the most popular girl in Biloxi. She knew just everybody. Didn't you, honey?
- Lucy Ewing Cooper: I'm sure she did.
- [chuckles]
- Lucy Ewing Cooper: Have you met anyone here in Dallas?
- Afton Cooper: [sighs] No. No one special yet.
- Lucy Ewing Cooper: I'm sure you will. In a city the size of Dallas, a girl can get involved with all sorts of people. But you never know who will talk. Don't you agree, Afton?
- Afton Cooper: Lucy, to tell you the truth, I'm not quite sure what you're getting at.
- Lucy Ewing Cooper: Well, it's just that... Mitch is so proud of you. And I know how hurt he'd be if... well, if he was to hear any sort of talk. We wouldn't want that, would we?
- Arliss Cooper: Oh, my goodness, no. Nobody would wanna hurt my Mitch.
- Lucy Ewing Cooper: Of course not. I'm sure Afton understands that. Don't you? Afton?
- Afton Cooper: I'm sorry. I really have to be going now. Lucy, I can't tell you how much
- [widening her eyes for the next word:]
- Afton Cooper: fun this has been.
- Lucy Ewing Cooper: Thank you. I really enjoyed it too.
- [returned that gesture]
- Lucy Ewing Cooper: Good luck tonight.
- [Afton leaves]
- Lucy Ewing Cooper: Bye.
- [her sister-in-law gives her a nasty glare before she's out the door]
- Jackie Dugan: I admit it. I'm surprised.
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: Surprised about what?
- Jackie Dugan: I saw you and Alex in the bar. I thought for sure you were headed for a long night.
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: Are you kidding? That was just a friendly drink.
- Jackie Dugan: Call it friendly if you want to, but, Pam, the man goes for you. It's written all over him. And that's why I can't understand why he's just disappeared like this.
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: You, dear heart, are an incurable romantic. And also dead wrong. Alex is just a friend.
- Jackie Dugan: [at Pam's hotel door] Sure. Night, Pam.
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: [reads the note left in her hotel room] "All you have to do is open the connecting door. It's up to you. Alex."
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: [sees him checking out] Alex?
- Alex Ward: [chipper but formal] Good morning.
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: What's going on? We've still got a full day's shoot left.
- Alex Ward: Yeah, uh... Bell-man, would you get these bags, and I'll need a cab to the airport. I'll be right out.
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: Why are you leaving?
- Alex Ward: I don't think there's any more reason for me to stay.
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: Is it because of last night? I thought you'd understand.
- Alex Ward: Oh, I do. That's why I'm leaving.
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: Alex...
- Alex Ward: Pam... I wanna be absolutely honest with you.
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: I'm not sure I want to hear this.
- Alex Ward: All my life, I have been the one that's pursued, and that's not ego. It's just a statement of fact. But since we met, and especially the last couple of nights here, it's... it's been all one-sided. I've... been doing the pursuing. Obviously, not well enough.
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: I'm so sorry. I'm just not ready. You know that.
- Alex Ward: Yes, I do. And you know how I feel about you, Pam. I made that clear.
- [looks down, then at her again:]
- Alex Ward: If Bobby ever... really neglects you... call me.
- [walks away, leaving Pamela staring after him sadly]
- Bobby Ewing: [in bedroom, while Pamela's unpacking] And I think Donna's right. It's a chance for me to really stand up and fight for what I believe in. Honey, you haven't said two words. Is something the matter?
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: Well, it's a big decision, Bobby.
- Bobby Ewing: I know it. I know it is, and it's very exciting.
- [chuckles]
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: You know this could affect our lives, and you didn't even think to talk to me about it?
- Bobby Ewing: That would have been difficult, wouldn't it? With you down on the Gulf Coast, playing with Alex Ward.
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: Who said I was playing?
- Bobby Ewing: Doesn't matter. But it's true, isn't it?
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: Alex was at the hotel.
- Bobby Ewing: Damn it, Pam. How could you do that?
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: Do what?
- Bobby Ewing: Alex was with you. You must have spent a lot of time together.
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: Yes, we did, and if you're going to tell me I was wrong, don't.
- Bobby Ewing: You didn't think it was wrong to spend time with Alex?
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: Did you think it was wrong when you were seeing Jenna Wade?
- Bobby Ewing: Now what are you dragging her into this for?
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: Because it is the same situation. It wasn't planned. It just happened.
- Bobby Ewing: The two of you... alone together in a hotel. Pam, you could have stopped it. Why didn't you?
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: Stopped what? Are you asking me if I slept with Alex?
- Bobby Ewing: Did you?
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: No. But I almost did. And do you want to know why, Bobby? Because I have been very lonely.
- Bobby Ewing: Lonely?
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: Lonely! Sometimes even when you're with me, I feel alone. And that's why I spent so much time with Alex. And that's why I almost went to bed with him.
- Bobby Ewing: I see.
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: I'm glad I didn't, because I know how you'd feel. I know how I felt when you were seeing Jenna.
- Bobby Ewing: Pamela...
- [rushes towards her]
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: Oh, wait a minute, Bobby, let me finish. I found out something. That no matter how many problems we have...
- [looking up into his eyes:]
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: I love you and only you. And I'll never see Alex Ward again.
- [shakes her head, then gets kissed]
