"Dallas" was best known for its high-powered wheeling-dealing; its beautiful women; it's 1980s luxury. It is not celebrated for richly Dickensian characters. Its characters would be nothing without their money.

This is not, however, invariably true.

In the pilot season David Wayne made "Digger" Barnes a funny yet pathetic drunken clown in a much richer way than the later, boisterous Keenan Wynn.

William Windom limned a beautifully comic yet nasty Amos Krebs (I hoped he'd become a regular). His portrayal is Texas by way of Dickens or even Shakespeare.

In this episode veteran supporting player Eddie Firestone presents an old man who who worked with Jock and Jason and Digger fifty years earlier and he's delightful as Wayne and Windom.

I wouldn't have wanted to turn "Dallas" into a kind of "Twin Peaks" but the show proves it might have been more quirky and colorful.

This episode is one in the story arc of Barnes fighting to control Ewing Oil. And it has a great scene where J R, Bobby and Ray enter a room to confront Pam, Cliff and Jamie, with Firestone's old man in tow. Firestone's performance buries them all.

"Dallas" was at its best when it introduced lovely little supporting vignettes. I'd rather see more characters like Wayne's Digger, Windom's Amos or Eddie Firestone here than Afton and Katherine put together, as good a video as that would make.
