- J.R. Ewing: Alan, I'm not that stupid, and you're surely not that smart. Now don't lie to me, boy.
- Alan Beam: You want the truth? I'll give it to you. Lucy and I have been spending a lot of time together. And we're very much in love.
- J.R. Ewing: In love?
- Alan Beam: Why not? She's pretty. And intelligent. And nice.
- J.R. Ewing: And rich. Don't forget rich.
- Bobby Ewing: Dancing with your best girl sure beats fighting with her, you know that?
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: I think anything beats fighting.
- Alan Beam: You know how important I am to J.R.
- Kristin Shepard: For now. You're replaceble.
- Alan Beam: What's replaceable is a secretary who does most of her work on her back.
- Alan Beam: Was that J.R. you were talking to just now?
- Kristin Shepard: Aha.
- Alan Beam: Well, why didn't you put me on?
- Kristin Shepard: He only had time for his most urgent messages. Flunkies aren't urgent. He'll meet you at the condo in the morning.
- Alan Beam: What's the matter with you? You know how important I am to J.R.
- Kristin Shepard: For now. You're replaceable.
- Kristin Shepard: [scoffs] What's replaceable is a secretary who does most of her work on her back.
- Alan Beam: I'd watch my mouth if I were you. Once the Barnes campaign is over, you're back on the streets.
- Kristin Shepard: You're worried, aren't you?
- [smirks]
- Kristin Shepard: You're afraid that if I get too close to J.R., I'll cut you out.
- Alan Beam: That's a laugh. He needs me.
- Kristin Shepard: Mm-hmm.
- [nods]
- Kristin Shepard: In only one way.
- [as he leaves:]
- Kristin Shepard: And from what I've heard about J.R., he's overdue for a change.
- Kristin Shepard: [refusing to connect Serena's phone call through to J.R] I'm sure he'll be back, but he does take long lunches. Why don't you try again in say in about... six weeks?
- Kristin Shepard: Are you sure I haven't done something?
- J.R. Ewing: I'm gonna take that drink after all.
- Kristin Shepard: [fixes him drink] Maybe you're getting bored with me.
- J.R. Ewing: Nonsense!
- Kristin Shepard: My mother always said how much you enjoy the chase. Even more than the capture.
- [hands over drink]
- J.R. Ewing: Your mother is... a remarkable woman.
- Kristin Shepard: Have I been too easy?
- J.R. Ewing: What do you think?
- Kristin Shepard: I don't know.
- [smiles]
- Kristin Shepard: Show me.
- Alan Beam: Kristin, would you get me a cup of coffee, please? Cream and sugar.
- Kristin Shepard: You must be joking.
- Alan Beam: Which word did you find amusing, cream or sugar?
- Kristin Shepard: J.R., do you have to meet with him here?
- J.R. Ewing: Darling, I didn't hire him for his manners. Would you please get us a cup of coffee? Be a sport, all right?
- Kristin Shepard: [as she goes off to fetch] Would you like one...?
- J.R. Ewing: No, I don't want any.
- Serena Wald: Hi.
- Connie Brasher: Hello.
- Serena Wald: I'm looking for J.R. Ewing.
- Connie Brasher: Do you have an appointment?
- Serena Wald: He's expecting me.
- Connie Brasher: Oh. Well, it's first office down the hall.
- Serena Wald: Thanks.
- Connie Brasher: Hmm.
- Kristin Shepard: [as Serena heads past her to J.R.'s office] Excuse me. May I help you?
- Serena Wald: You just relax, darling. I can find Mr. Ewing myself.
- Kristin Shepard: I'm afraid that's not possible. He doesn't see anyone without an appointment.
- Serena Wald: He's expecting me.
- Kristin Shepard: I'm afraid that's not possible, either. I have his schedule right here.
- Serena Wald: Mm-hmm.
- [walks past, gets grabbed]
- Serena Wald: That's my arm, dear.
- [Connie is enjoying this show]
- Serena Wald: I was sent by Alan Beam. He told me to deliver this package to J.R. Ewing.
- Kristin Shepard: Then you can give it to me.
- Serena Wald: I said to Mr. Ewing!
- Kristin Shepard: I open all of J.R.'s mail!
- Serena Wald: [smirks] Not this.
- J.R. Ewing: [coming out of his office] What is going on?
- [sees attractive blonde]
- J.R. Ewing: Oh, hello.
- Kristin Shepard: J.R., she has a package for you, and she won't give it to me.
- J.R. Ewing: Oh...
- Serena Wald: My instructions were to give this to no one but J.R. Ewing personally. Mr. Beam said you were expecting it.
- J.R. Ewing: Oh, Alan, Alan.
- [takes package]
- J.R. Ewing: Sure, I have been expecting it.
- [to Serena]
- J.R. Ewing: Step into my office, please.
- [to Kristin:]
- J.R. Ewing: Yeah, hold my calls, will you? This might take some time to check out.
- Kristin Shepard: J.R.!
- [Connie smiles]
- J.R. Ewing: Oh, Kristin, you still here? Better be careful, honey, you'll get old before your time if you work so hard.
- Kristin Shepard: I'll exercise.
- J.R. Ewing: [chuckles] That's a good one. I just wanna see that Serena gets home safely. I'll see you in the morning.
- Kristin Shepard: [after they've left] Beam,
- [picks up phone]
- Kristin Shepard: this time you've stepped over the line.
- Alan Beam: I didn't mean I don't love your body. Of course I love your body. A dead man would love your body, are you kidding? The point is, you're not just someone... I go to bed with. I'm crazy about you. Now what do I have to do to prove it to you?
- Betty Lou Barker: You can stop spending so much time with Lucy Ewing.
- Alan Beam: I don't spend any more time with her than I have to, and you know why I have to.
- Betty Lou Barker: That doesn't mean I like it.
- Alan Beam: Well, I don't like it either, but I'm doing it for us.
- Betty Lou Barker: There hasn't been much "us" lately.
- Alan Beam: [sighs] Betty Lou, I told you, this is the way it has to be. I'll be rich, and you'll have everything you've ever wanted.
