- Kristin Shepard: Sue Ellen, where have you been?
- Sue Ellen Ewing: Kristin, what are you doing here?
- Kristin Shepard: I can't believe you came back after what happened.
- Sue Ellen Ewing: I don't know what you're talking about.
- Kristin Shepard: You don't remember what happened last night?
- Sue Ellen Ewing: [long silence] No.
- Kristin Shepard: [incredulously] Nothing at all?
- Sue Ellen Ewing: [another long silence] No.
- Kristin Shepard: Sue Ellen... J.R.'s been shot.
- Sue Ellen Ewing: [shakes her head in shock] No. No.
- [hears baby John crying out for his mother]
- Sue Ellen Ewing: My baby...
- [rushes towards stairs]
- Sue Ellen Ewing: My baby...
- Jock Ewing: Your husband may be dying and you're out gallivanting around someplace.
- Sue Ellen Ewing: I wasn't gallivanting.
- Jock Ewing: Then where were you?
- Kristin Shepard: Sue Ellen was sick.
- Jock Ewing: Sick. You mean DRUNK!
- Kristin Shepard: [entering hospital waiting area] Uncle Jock, Miss Ellie, I heard about J.R. on the radio. I came as fast as I could.
- Miss Ellie Ewing: Kristin...
- [they hold hands]
- Kristin Shepard: Is he...?
- Jock Ewing: He's, uh...
- [nods]
- Jock Ewing: Well, he's holding up.
- Kristin Shepard: [looks around] Where's the rest of the family? Where's Sue Ellen?
- Miss Ellie Ewing: She didn't come home. It's gonna be a terrible shock for her when she does.
- Kristin Shepard: Is there anything I can do?
- Miss Ellie Ewing: Go out to Southfork and wait for her. It will be easier if you break the news.
- Kristin Shepard: Whatever you think is best.
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: [finds Cliff day-drinking] Well, no "Hello, sis, have a seat. Have a drink"?
- Cliff Barnes: How'd you find me?
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: Your secretary said you'd be here. What are you doing out here, drinking in the middle of the afternoon?
- [to the waiter:]
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: Nothing for me, thanks.
- Cliff Barnes: [to the waiter] I'll have another, please.
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: Well?
- Cliff Barnes: What?
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: Why aren't you at work?
- Cliff Barnes: Pam, I don't have to account to you for my time.
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: Okay. Cliff, does this have anything to do with J.R.?
- Cliff Barnes: You know what? It seems that everything in my life, one way or another, has something to do with J.R.
- [waiter brings fresh drink and is about to clear away the old one]
- Cliff Barnes: No, I want that.
- [to Pamela:]
- Cliff Barnes: Have you been to the hospital yet?
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: J.R. was still in surgery when I left. You know, Bobby and I left Southfork. We were on our way to California.
- Cliff Barnes: You left? What, you were going on vacation?
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: No, we left Southfork. Bobby couldn't stand J.R.'s underhanded deals anymore. His closing down Ewing 23 was the last straw. He didn't want anything to do with doing you out of your share of the profits.
- Cliff Barnes: Well, that's nice. But it's pretty academic now. The field is closed. There are no profits.
- [takes sip of his drink]
- Pamela Barnes Ewing: Cliff, the reason I came to see you is because Jock named you as a prime suspect in J.R.'s shooting.
- Cliff Barnes: [smirks, takes another sip] I said to my boss, the DA: "I'm probably a prime suspect in this case. I certainly have enough motive. And if anybody deserves shooting, it's J.R."
- [rises]
- Cliff Barnes: But you tell me. You're closer to me than anybody else. Do you think your brother's a killer?
