- J.R. Ewing: Hey now, wait a minute, isn't anybody gonna say something like: "Thank you, J.R., for making us billionaires"? Momma, Daddy, I did this for you.
- Jock Ewing: You just gambled our home, that's all. And that sure as hell ain't anything to be proud of, J.R.
- Sue Ellen Ewing: You are wrong. I love my son!
- Cliff Barnes: You can't love anyone. All you can do is use.
- Lucy Ewing: [about Little John] But don't worry about him, Sue Ellen, his cousin Lucy will teach him how to survive in this family. I'll show him how to grow up without parents and make the whole world pay.
- Miss Ellie Ewing: My daddy swore there'd never be any drilling on this land. So did I.
- Jock Ewing: Well, if I could do anything about it, Miss Ellie, I'd do it.
- Miss Ellie Ewing: Whatever needed doing, should have been done years ago.
- Jock Ewing: What do you mean?
- Miss Ellie Ewing: I mean J.R. You instilled in him a desire for power and money. Doesn't seem to care about anything else. Not even his home.
- J.R. Ewing: Kristin, place an overseas call to Hank Johnson at the drilling site.
- Kristin Shepard: Right away.
- J.R. Ewing: What time is it over there, anyway?
- J.R. Ewing: It's about two a.m.
- J.R. Ewing: Good. He's half asleep. He won't lie to me.
- J.R. Ewing: Bobby, you know, I just can't believe you that and I have the same momma and daddy. You're just too damn good to be rich, you know that?
- Linda Bradley: [referring to Sue Ellen] Oh my land, you will not believe who just walked in the door.
- J.R. Ewing: Morning, Kristin.
- Kristin Shepard: Good morning, J.R.
- [hands him a note]
- J.R. Ewing: Thank you.
- [reads it]
- Connie Brasher: [entering with tray] Morning, J.R. Coffee's all gone, but there's a fresh pot almost ready.
- [goes to fetch]
- Kristin Shepard: J.R., they're all in there.
- J.R. Ewing: Who's all?
- Kristin Shepard: Bobby, your Daddy, and Vaughn Leland.
- J.R. Ewing: [frowns] Vaughn Leland?
- Kristin Shepard: [rubbing his shoulders] Can I get you something, J.R.?
- J.R. Ewing: [despondent as he stares at silent phone] No.
- Kristin Shepard: Hank hasn't called from overseas yet, has he?
- J.R. Ewing: You got it.
- [sighs]
- Kristin Shepard: Well, do you want me to put in another call?
- J.R. Ewing: [shakes his head] No.
- [phone buzzes]
- Kristin Shepard: [picks up, listens, covers receiver] It's the Associated Press, they wanna know something about an oil well.
- J.R. Ewing: [sighs, takes receiver] Hello. J.R. Ewing here. What? Yeah, I own those leashes. No. No, I'm in it alone. That's... that's the way I do things.
- [other phone buzzes]
- J.R. Ewing: What? Well, now, I, I, I, I haven't got a confirmation on that yet.
- Kristin Shepard: [excitedly] J.R., Hank's on the phone!
- J.R. Ewing: What? Hank? Where the hell have you been? What? What?
- [exclaiming:]
- J.R. Ewing: Yeah!
- [to Kristin:]
- J.R. Ewing: We hit! Hold it! Hold it! Hang on, hang on there. Uh...
- [back on line 1:]
- J.R. Ewing: Hello. Yes, that's a confirmation. Absolutely. A... a strike in the Pacific. Maybe the biggest one ever yet!
- [nods]
- J.R. Ewing: Yeah, you can quote me. J.R. Ewing.
- [chuckles, then goes back on line 2:]
- J.R. Ewing: Hello, Hank? Hang on.
- [grabs Kristin]
- J.R. Ewing: We hit it! We hit it!
- [as Connie comes dashing in:]
- J.R. Ewing: We hit it! It's a gusher! A big one!
- [hugs the two secretaries while phones ring off the hook]
- J.R. Ewing: I don't believe it! I don't have time for that, go answer them phones!
- [the two rush off, and he's back on line 2:]
- J.R. Ewing: Hello, hello, Hank...
- Kristin Shepard: [at reception, secretaries scurrying] Hello?
- Connie Brasher: Ewing Oil? Yes, Mr. Lewis, it's true. Uh, just a minute, please, the other phone.
- [on line 2:]
- Connie Brasher: Ewing Oil. Dallas Press? Yes, that's right. He's on the phone with the foreman.
- [behind her, J.R. emerges from his office]
- Connie Brasher: Well, just a minute, please.
- J.R. Ewing: I'm off to Southfork. I can't wait to see the expression on their faces when they hear the news.
- [whoops with joy]
- Lucy Ewing: [Baby John is crying] Is little John alright?
- Mrs. Reeves: He's fine. He's just hungry. I'm gonna warm his bottle. He started on meat today. He loved it!
- Lucy Ewing: Of course, he's a Ewing.
