- J.R. Ewing: How dare you have a private detective follow me!
- Sue Ellen Ewing: Why J.R., you're getting positively paranoid.
- Sue Ellen Ewing: We are not gonna make love, J.R. Not tonight, not tomorrow. Not until the day I take my son and walk out of your life.
- Jock Ewing: You know, I don't remember Kristen drinking anything but white wine.
- Miss Ellie Ewing: Well, maybe that's all she does around you.
- [Jock laughs]
- Sue Ellen Ewing: You don't believe most of this, do you, Dr. Elby? That my husband is planning to commit me. That my little sister may be helping me. That I'm afraid to stay with J.R. And even more afraid to leave him.
- Dr. Simon Ellby: I believe that your husband is capable of many things that most people aren't.
- Kristin Shepard: [at restaurant] Thank you for coming, Sue Ellen.
- Sue Ellen Ewing: I came because I was curious. I can't imagine what you think we have to talk about.
- Kristin Shepard: I don't blame you for feeling the way you do.
- Sue Ellen Ewing: Really?
- Kristin Shepard: I've been terrible. I've done everything to break you and J.R. up. I even let him...
- [lowers eyes]
- Kristin Shepard: We became lovers. I've done nothing but cause you trouble. And I'm truly ashamed.
- Sue Ellen Ewing: Why this sudden confession?
- Kristin Shepard: Because... I couldn't stand it anymore when I saw you and J.R. together at your anniversary party. It made me realize just how dreadful I've been.
- Sue Ellen Ewing: [smiles] And now that we both know that, so what?
- Kristin Shepard: So I'm leaving Dallas, Sue Ellen. I'm going to school in California. But before I left, I had to see you, to try to make it up to you somehow.
- Sue Ellen Ewing: [shakes her head] It doesn't matter anymore, Kristin. I no longer care what J.R. does.
- Kristin Shepard: I tried to figure out why I did it. It just comes down to one thing. It's what Mama taught me to do. I was only doing what I've been brought up to do.
- Sue Ellen Ewing: [smiles] You are so smart, Kristin. I was much older than you before I figured out I was just, uh, living Mama's dreams.
- Kristin Shepard: I'm trying to change, Sue Ellen. And I hope that we can at least be friends.
- Sue Ellen Ewing: Why not?
- Kristin Shepard: To friendship.
- [raises her glass, then 'accidentally' spills her drink into Sue Ellen's lap]
- Kristin Shepard: Oh, Sue Ellen, oh, God, I'm so sorry! Your beautiful dress!
- Sue Ellen Ewing: Oh, Kristin, it's all right, it's all right, really. I'll just, uh, I'll try to dry it off.
- Kristin Shepard: God!
- Sue Ellen Ewing: I'm sorry...
- [hurries off, while Kristin looks pleased, the plan has been set in motion]
- J.R. Ewing: [entering apartment] Hi.
- Kristin Shepard: Well... I thought maybe you'd died.
- J.R. Ewing: Oh?
- [chuckles:]
- J.R. Ewing: Well... no such luck, huh?
- Kristin Shepard: Did your new secretary tell you I called... all day?
- J.R. Ewing: [fixing himself a drink] Yeah, she did. You know, that could get to be an annoying habit to get into, Kristin.
- Kristin Shepard: Well, why didn't you call me back?
- J.R. Ewing: [weary sigh] Kristin, I just came by for a quiet drink and to see you, honey. If I want screamin' and yellin', I can go home for that.
- Serena Wald: [in lavishly decorated lounge] Do you have to leave so soon?
- J.R. Ewing: [fixing tie in front of ornate mirror] Well, I wouldn't wanna overstay my welcome.
- Serena Wald: [pours him a drink] You know, you're different from most of my... friends.
- J.R. Ewing: Oh, how's that?
- Serena Wald: [hands him the drink] Well, you're the only one that hasn't offered to take me away from all this. Set me up in a place of our own.
- J.R. Ewing: Take you away from all this...? Honey, you... you got a good deal here.
- [finishes drink in one gulp]
- J.R. Ewing: Tax-free too.
- Serena Wald: If you did set me up, it would probably save you money in the long run.
- J.R. Ewing: [scoffs, returns glass] Don't push it, or there may not be a long run.
- [takes out lots of money]
- J.R. Ewing: Well, I like everything just the way it is. Cash and carry.
- [drops money into that wine glass]
- Serena Wald: [with irony] You certainly know how to say all the right things.
- J.R. Ewing: [chuckles] Yeah. Like you said, I'm different.
- [leaves]
- Kristin Shepard: [goes to open her door] Well, J.R, why you use your...
- [but it's Alan]
- Kristin Shepard: Oh.
- Alan Beam: Kristin.
- Kristin Shepard: J.R. didn't tell me you were coming.
- Alan Beam: I'll bet he didn't.
- [enters]
- Alan Beam: Matter of fact, I'll bet he doesn't tell you much of anything lately.
- Kristin Shepard: What do you want?
- Alan Beam: Well...
- [sits down without being invited to do so]
- Alan Beam: I think you and I should talk.
- Kristin Shepard: There's nothing you could say that would be of any interest to me.
- Alan Beam: Considering we've both been fired, maybe there is.
- Kristin Shepard: I wasn't fired. I was only working for J.R. temporarily.
- Alan Beam: The way it looks, you may only be here temporarily. Look, I know J.R. now, maybe better than you do. As soon as he doesn't need you, or gets tired of you, you're gonna be out. And I mean out.
- Kristin Shepard: Even if you know what you're talking about... What can I do?
- Alan Beam: By yourself?
- [shakes his head]
- Alan Beam: Nothing.
- [gets up, walks towards her]
- Alan Beam: But maybe together, we could get to him.
- Kristin Shepard: What good would that do me?
- Alan Beam: Doesn't revenge mean anything to you?
- Kristin Shepard: Not if there's no profit in it.
- Alan Beam: Well, I'm beginning to see what J.R. liked about you.
- J.R. Ewing: Up till now I've been understanding. I've put up with Sue Ellen's fooling around. I've tried to be a good husband and a father. And look how she pays me back. Just look.
- Kristin Shepard: Why don't you just divorce her and be done with it?
- J.R. Ewing: 'Cause she's not gonna settle just for a simple divorce. She wants to take my son away from me. And with what she has on me now, divorce could be a little bit messy. And Daddy and Mama don't need to read any more headlines, that's for sure.
- Kristin Shepard: Well, I don't see what choices you have.
- J.R. Ewing: Well, Kristin, I was thinking about that on the way over here. I've got to get Sue Ellen back in that sanitarium. Gotta get her locked up for good.
- Kristin Shepard: But how? She doesn't drink anymore.
- J.R. Ewing: Well, maybe we could get her starting up again. Or at least convince everybody she started again. And I might need your help for it, honey.
- Kristin Shepard: You know I'd do anything for you, J.R. I always have, haven't I?
- J.R. Ewing: And I've always showed you my appreciation, haven't I?
- Kristin Shepard: But... this time, I want more. If this works, I want you to divorce Sue Ellen. I want to be Mrs. J.R. Ewing.
- Kristin Shepard: Uncle Jock...
- Jock Ewing: Yes?
- Kristin Shepard: I was wondering, did Sue Ellen get home all right yesterday?
- Jock Ewing: Of course. Why?
- Kristin Shepard: Well, I was very worried about her.
- Jock Ewing: Oh?
- Kristin Shepard: I didn't know that she started to drink again.
- Jock Ewing: [looks up] Was she drinking with you yesterday?
- Kristin Shepard: At lunch. She must have had three, no, four drinks. Not counting the one she spilled all over herself.
