How not to Fire a Gun
"Big Guns" offers an object lesson in how not to fire a gun. Our brave boys have a large field-gun delivered to the church hall and try their best to find out how to work it, even though none of them, least of all Mainwaring (Arthur Lowe) has the least clue how to begin. It is left to the fussy Verger (Edward Sinclair) to offer a few vital suggestions about how to begin.
Sometimes we get the feeling in DAD'S ARMY that the platoon are overgrown children playing at soldiers. This is certainly true of this episode, where Mainwaring organizes a rehearsal for a field activity using child's toys, tins of Spam, cardboard boxes and sawdust. Everyone takes the activity incredibly seriously, save for the Verger, who brings it to an abrupt close by putting up the blackout curtains.
In the end the platoon offer a demonstration of how to fire the gun in front of the Town Clerk (Edward Evans) with predictably chaotic results.
For lovers of television trivia, this episode is also notable for a brief appearance of Don Estelle, later a stalwart of IT AIN'T HALF HOT, MUM, and Talfryn Thomas - who took over in DAD'S ARMY as the press photographer Mr. Cheeseman after James Beck's tragically early death.
