Notable for being the first "Combat!" episode to be broadcast in color, "The Gun" has Vic and his squad accompanying a tank piloted by guest star Warren Stevens, to do battle with plenty of Germans.
When Stevens' tank is put out of commission in battle, Vics squad captures the massive German cannon that destroyed the tank, and they start an arduous trek over a mile crosscountry dragging it to go up against a German bunker.
The color makes the violent battles more vivid -all that's absent are the red exploding blood packs that were soon to become popularized in hit movies like "Bonnie & Clyde" and of course "The WIld Bunch".
The arduous task of pushing the cannon by hand (later aided by a horse to pull it) recalls the premise of the 1957 movie "The Pride and the Passion" (with its ultimate superstar cast of Cary Grant, Frank Sinatra and Sophia Loren!), and is a forerunner of those quixotic movies made by the great German director Werner Herzog, notably "Fitzcarraldo".
