Angels on Vacation
moonspinner5526 September 2011
Not-bad episode from the generally excellent freshman season of the popular Spelling-Goldberg TV detective series. While en-route to a mountain resort for a three-day holiday, heavenly crime-fighters Jill and Kelly must contend with Sabrina's "celebrity worship" of a Polish politician and author who will also be at the chalet, giving a speech on the evils of communism to delegates of various countries. But the trouble really starts after wily Professor Wycinski (Theodore Bikel) makes innocent/intimate chit-chat with Sabrina in her hotel room, but doesn't appear to recognize her moments later when she's out by the pool boasting to her friends. The Angels smell trouble, which leads in due course to Sabrina posing as a near-sighted waitress in the (rather dinky) dining hall, Jill posing as a maid (her legendary blonde mane stuffed inside a red bandanna), and Kelly unceremoniously acting as lookout for the Professor's son (who misses his plane!). The plot is overloaded with heavies, including an F.B.I. agent who threatens to arrest Sabrina for no reason, and the surprise twist (lookalike Wycinskis!) is ludicrous. However, the interplay between the bantering Angels is a lot of fun, and Kate Jackson gets to perform some uncharacteristic slapstick with her dinner plates. Farrah Fawcett-Majors (at one point braless in a tennis shirt and short-shorts) is the no-nonsense Angel this time, telling Sabrina that a ringer for the Professor "could do a helluva lot of damage!" Jaclyn Smith flashes a floral bikini--which she purchased at the gift shop--but spends the rest of the episode hiding underneath a black-and-white flannel shirt thick enough to be a jacket. That's no way for an Angel of Charlie's to spend her vacation!

This is one of my favorite episodes from Season 1!

This episode features Theodore Bikel who doesn't have much to do yet still lends gravitas to the role of Sabrina's political idol. (It would have been a better 2 part episode given the nature of the plot) Bikel is a famous political dissident from Poland who's public words are so important apparently the communists concoct a kidnapping scheme to prevent him from giving his address to a group in a dining room of the hotel the angels are spending the weekend at, courtesy of Charlie (good boss!) Love the Cold War intrigue, even if parts were slightly silly. A decade after this episode Reagan made his famous Tear Down This Wall speech so it was interesting to see this featuring a consequential anti-Communist figure. Kate Jackson showed some goofy slap stick humor rarely seen today. A lot of casual consumption of alcohol in those days. Kelly and Jill tie together all the other plot details in symetrical (if predictable) collaborative effort (it's 1970s television folks) Made me want to go back to being 10 years old and asking my mom if I could stay up till 11 on Wednesday night's again!

Uneven, waste of talent

Firstly, it's hard to understand how people can like this, but the expert reviewer, gets it right.

I am very knowledgeable about most 60s and 70s shows, but this one is absolutely ridiculous.

The plot isn't really established until 35 minutes into the show.

The great Theodore Bikel has almost no lines, an absolute waste of talent, and the great Albert Paulsen, is not given a good script at all.

The leads absolutely cannot carry this show and everything is not well laid out.
