The little girl who is heard outside chanting insults at Blackadder, is voiced by Miranda Richardson.
Tom Baker has told Doctor Who (1963) fans that this was "a pretty miserable experience" because he became annoyed by the "highly opinionated" Rowan Atkinson telling him how to do it. Atkinson wanted Baker to play Captain Rum as a crashing bore and underplay it instead of the more extravagant performance he had given in rehearsals. Baker took his advice and delivered a different performance for the technical run in the afternoon of the recording. However, the producer and director were horrified by this different interpretation, thinking he was ill, and told him to go back to playing it the way it was rehearsed. Baker said Atkinson never spoke to him again and he skipped the party after the show to avoid being snubbed by Atkinson. Baker said his only consolation has been the repeat fees because it has been shown so many times.
Tom Baker has described his own performance as "appalling". Nevertheless, he has acknowledged that this is one of his most recognized roles to the public outside of his long stint as Doctor Who (1963). Even decades later, he would know it had been repeated because people would shout at him in the street his catchphrase "You have a woman's ..."
Tom Baker, as Captain Redbeard Rum, can clearly be heard shouting the standard British actor's "crowd noise" of "Rhubarb, rhubarb" - even though the "crowd" in this case consists of only four people.
