Barney and the Big One
Hitchcoc11 December 2019
Once again Mr. Fife leaps to a monumental conclusion based on almost no evidence. He sees Andy kissing Helen in the Jewelry store and decides they are getting engaged. This sets a huge todo in motion. Andy and Helen are stunned when people hug them and start to cry for what appears to be no reason. We know the ax will fall at some point. Quite enjoyable.

Andy saved the day

Warning: Spoilers
Once again Barney jumps to conclusions. He thinks Andy and Helen are engaged . He sees them in the jewelry store and they kiss . It's not the case at all Andy was just helping Helen as she was buying a graduation gift for her niece.

While it might be one of the natural assumptions one could make Barney should have respected their right to reveal it themselves. Instead he spreads it all around town and they all plan a party and redo the bedroom with Helen in mind. Aunt Bee takes much pleasure in it as she and Thelma Lou decorate it in a way that Aunt Bee would love for her own. Everyone chips in .

Barney and Thelma Lou keep them distracted until it's time for the party. Gomer is supposed to give out a hoot when they arrive so everyone can yell " surprise "! He's suffered his mouth so much he can't. Helen and Andy are of course shocked and reveal what they were really doing. Barney wouldn't accept it at first. Everyone is upset with Barney but Andy says they have food and pop and a party they can still have a good time.

He and Helen talk privately and say all the right things which is one of the things I enjoy about them as a couple . They can always talk it through. In the end they join the party Andy will give everyone their money back and he gifts Aunt Bee with her dream bedroom! Lovely!

Gomer gets after Barney! Telling him what a dumb trick and tells Barney don't ever call him stupid again! Swell party but a dumb trick!

The very end has Barney trying to figure out what everyone chipped in.

Funny episode . I don't know if it's worse for Barney to spread things around true or not or if it's worse everyone is still so quick to believe Barney and go overboard.

Barney costs Andy a lot of money.

Barney meddling in, or falsely interpreting Andy's marriage plans was done to death. But, always produces a very good episode

Highlights were Andy non-pc explaining to Opie about women, Gomer's "hoot owl", and Floyd admiring it, lots & lots of funny crying from joy, then Andy & Helen explaining there's been a mistake. Rance Howard pops up, which is always a pleasure.

Quite a good epilogue with Barney trying to give back the money donated for the gift.

Good moments throughout

I hadn't realized how good this epiode was until I rewatched the exchange between Andy and Opie at the dinner table while Aunt Bee was in the kitchen. It was a non-politically correct but so humanly correct discussion about gender differences. Today, it is so refreshing. This episode restores my faith that at least at one time we could broadcast some basic truths about the differences between men and women, MUCH of the time. Mainly though, it's a strong show, with all the characters behaving up to our expectations, including Floyd, Barney, Gomer, and sadly, Aunt Bee and Thelma Lou who somehow believe (because they want to) Barney's crazy suspicion about Andy and Helen. But if they didn't, we wouldn't have all the fun!
