Here's a TAGS episode with a bit of shock value. A local farmer (played by stalwart character actor Charles Lane) is being evicted to make way for a highway project, and most of the townswomen - including, very vocally, Aunt Bee - rally behind him. Andy insists that he must carry out the state law, but this only causes the women to protest all the more vehemently against him with pickets, marches and protest songs. What the women don't realize, and what Andy finally discovers, is that the ostensibly kindly and innocent farmer has something to hide.
The first impression one gets from this episode is of a lot of abrasive yelling - Aunt Bee yelling at Andy, Andy yelling at Aunt Bee, Andy and Aunt Bee snapping at Barney - which is really uncharacteristic of TAGS. Andy and Aunt Bee even have an ugly spar on the front porch right in front of Opie. What on earth was going on in Mayberry? Were the writers making a daring attempt to reflect the changing times? I don't know for sure, but I do know that this episode doesn't leave an entirely pleasant taste in one's mouth.
Paradoxically, this episode features a hilarious bit in the beginning in which Barney tries to give Otis the "third degree"; but even this bit has a strenuous, desperate air about it. "Aunt Bee the Crusader" is an anomaly in the TAGS canon. Whatever you do, don't show it to someone who's new to TAGS. But for us faithful fans, it offers an excursion into a dark and not too attractive corner of Mayberry.
