Bryan Singer Says 'X-Men: First Class' Might Supercede 'Magneto' Movie

22 December 2009 6:01 AM, PST | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

Last week’s announcement that Bryan Singer will return to direct “X-Men: First Class” has sparked speculation about which characters will appear in the film — especially since Singer has indicated that the focus will be on Professor Xavier and Magneto during their 20s. However, given the age of Magneto in this film, a “Magneto” solo movie may no longer be in the cards.

“This story would probably utilize some of the 'Magneto' story because it deals with a young Magneto,” explained Singer during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “So it might supercede that because this would explore that relationship between a young energetic professor and a disenfranchised victim of the Holocaust.”

“The X-Men universe is boundless,” continued Singer. “These are great characters. And as young characters, they are quite different than the characters we have seen in the contemporary movies.”

No Need For X-Men Origins: Magneto

22 December 2009 4:49 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Things are going according to plan for the future of the X-Men film universe… at least according to my thoughts on what we’d see from Fox Studios going forward. As expected, Bryan Singer is back in the fold and will be directing the prequel X-Men: First Class, and X-Men Origins: Magneto is seemingly even less likely to happen than before.

While some X-Men fans were hopeful of the second X-Men Origins film following the history of the master of magnetism, to me it was the least likely of the projects in development to happen. Not only would such a project require a re-cast of the title character, which would never please the full fanbase, but it would therefore be less bankable since the actors would be new to the franchise. Magneto was cool for the X-Men trilogy but would moviegoers buy into him as the lead with Sir Ian McKellen not playing him? »

Singer's 'First Class' to supersede 'Magneto'

22 December 2009 2:05 AM, PST | digitalspy | See recent digitalspy news »

Bryan Singer has claimed that his X-Men: First Class film will replace the planned Magneto prequel. The director, who signed a deal to return to the superhero series last week, suggested to The Hollywood Reporter that his project's overlap with Magneto could mean that David Goyer's movie gets put on the back-burner. "This story would probably utilise some of the Magneto story because it deals with a young Magneto, so it might supersede that because this would explore that relationship between a young energetic (more) »

'X-Men: First Class' Will Use Some of 'Magneto' Story

22 December 2009 12:58 AM, PST | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

Bryan Singer has shared some information about the idea of his upcoming movie project "X-Men: First Class". Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter on the phone, the helmer has revealed that the next installment of "X-Men" film franchise will include some parts of "Magneto" story and might supersede the film about the super-powered villain.

"This story would probably utilize some of the Magneto story because it deals with a young Magneto," he stated. Singer then went on explaining, "It might supersede that because this would explore that relationship between a young energetic professor [Xavier] and a disenfranchised victim of the Holocaust."

Previously, Singer has told Variety that "First Class" will revolve around "the formative years of Xavier and Magneto, and the formation of the school and where their relationship took a wrong turn". Moreover, the filmmaker teased, "There is a romantic element, and some of the mutants from 'X-Men' will figure into the plot, »

Bryan Singer to lead ‘X-Men: First Class’

20 December 2009 12:31 PM, PST | The Scorecard Review | See recent Scorecard Review news »

X-Men and X2 director Bryan Singer is set to helm another movie about the mutant superheroes. Entitled X-Men: First Class, the film will show the beginnings of Xavier and Magneto, with them as friendly twenty-somethings.

“This is the formative years of [the characters], and the formation of the school and where the relationship took a wrong turn,” said Singer. “There is a romantic element, and some of the mutants from X-Men will figure into the plot, though I don’t want to say which ones. There will be a lot of mutants and a great villain.”

“Whether it’s ‘Batman,’ ‘Lord of the Rings’ or ‘Star Trek,’ if the characters are good, you want to see them on their journey even if you know their destiny,” said Singer. “I put myself in the fan’s position, and I think this story is something I would want to see, and so will they. »

Singer Attending "X-Men: First Class"

Director Bryan "Superman Returns" Singer will take on the Fox feature "X-Men: First Class" for producers Lauren Shuler Donner and Simon Kinberg, based on a script treatment Singer wrote for the film.

Screenplay is by Jamie Moss.

In Toronto, Singer directed Fox' first "X-Men" film in 2000. Two subsequent "X-Men" sequels were filmed in Vancouver.

"X-Men: First Class" will focus on the back-story of the famous Marvel Comics' mutant super-hero team, during their formative years, revolving around 20-something "X-Men" mutant leader 'Xavier' and his nemesis, 'evil' mutant 'Magneto', revealing how their relationship took a 'wrong turn', to the detriment of mankind.

Singer also confirmed there will be a romantic element, with some of the original mutants from the "X-Men" team entering into the scheme of things, as well as 'new mutants' and a new villain.

Fox continues to develop a dedicated feature revolving around "Magneto", a sequel to "Wolverine »

There have been further developments in the news that Bryan Singer is returning to 20th Century Fox for another X-Men movie.

Singer yesterday sealed a deal to helm origin flick X-Men: First Class, which had a screenplay by Gossip Girl creator Josh Schwartz and takes its title from the First Class comic books depicting the mutant team in their teenage years.

There were behind-the-scenes whispers about bringing in new writing talent and it's now been revealed that Fox has hired scribe Jamie Moss to work with Singer on the project.

Moss worked on Ghost in the Shell for DreamWorks and wrote Street Kings, the crime drama directed by David Ayer.

Singer Talks More "X-Men: First Class"

18 December 2009 7:25 AM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

Following his news at the "Avatar" premiere the other day that he's returning to the "X-Men" filled, director Bryan Singer tells Variety that the decision was one he thought long and hard about, ultimately agreeing when he found a storyline that interested him enough.

"This is the formative years of Xavier and Magneto, and the formation of the school and where there relationship took a wrong turn. There is a romantic element, and some of the mutants from 'X-Men' will figure into the plot, though I don't want to say which ones. There will be a lot of new mutants and a great villain" says Singer of the project entitled "X-Men: First Class".

Xavier and Magneto in the film are likely to be played by younger actors portraying the characters in their 20's/30's, which means many of the mutants from the "X-Men" films will simply be too young to appear. »

Fox Confirms Bryan Singer's 'X-Men' Return, Hires New Writer For 'First Class'

Following the unexpected announcement earlier this week, Fox has confirmed that Bryan Singer will return to direct “X-Men: First Class.”

According to Variety, the previous draft of “X-Men: First Class” has been discarded in favor of a new treatment by Singer. Jamie Moss (“Ghost in The Shell”) has been hired to write the script and Fox is reportedly moving “aggressively” with the development.

"This is the formative years of Xavier and Magneto, and the formation of the school and where their relationship took a wrong turn," Singer told Variety. "There is a romantic element, and some of the mutants from 'X-Men' will figure into the plot, though I don't want to say which ones. There will be a lot of new mutants and a great villain."

As many of you no doubt already know, Bryan Singer revealed a major update about his future with the X-Men franchise last night while on the blue carpet for the Avatar premiere.

That revelation of course was that he will be directing X-Men: First Class. As of now, Fox has confirmed the deal for Singer’s return to the director’s chair and develop the film about Professor Xavier’s first group of young mutant recruits.

As we knew from before, Josh Schwartz (The Oc, Chuck) was working on the script for First Class since last November but the studio has signed Jamie Moss (Street Kings) to pen the screenplay for the project.

The Hollywood Reporter points out that they’re “going back to the drawing board” for the movie, explaining the signing of a new writer to work with Bryan Singer.

Jamie Moss to Pen Script for Bryan Singer’s X-men: First Class

Following last night’s exciting news that Bryan Singer would be returning to the X-Men franchise to direct X-Men: First Class, Heat Vision reports that Jamie Moss (Street Kings) will be writing the screenplay for the film.  Based off the Marvel Comic miniseries by Jeff Parker, First Class follows the X-Men in their first years at Xavier’s Institute for Higher Learning.  According to Hv, the story is still in the early stages but it will deal with the first meeting between Charlex Xavier and Magneto and involve the creation of the Institute.  Presumably, this would also mean the creation of the X-Men since Cyclops, Jean Grey, Beast, Iceman, and Angel were the original five.  However, producer Lauren Shuler Donner has only mentioned the first three, which could mean that they’ll leave out Iceman and Angel in order to keep continuity with the movies.  Additionally, brand new characters will »

Can You Picture Robert Pattinson as Magneto?

12 December 2009 9:30 PM, PST | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

Actually, I can picture this. I may not be a fan of 'The Twilight Saga', but the idea of Robert Pattinson playing a young Magneto in the long simmering 'X-Men Origins: Magneto' project makes perfect sense to me.

It seems to make sense to Pattison, too. According to the Coventry Telegraph, the young heartthrob recently responded to a question about whether or not he'd like to play any comic book characters on the big screen, saying: "Well, yeah, I think everyone wonders about that sometimes. My little cousin tells me I look like Magneto so I guess that's who I should probably play."

Action heroes (and villains) appear to be the big draw right now for the 'Twilight' alums. Taylor Lautner has signed on to play the superhuman Max Steel, while Kellan Lutz wants to play the lead role in The First Avenger: Captain America.

Robert Pattinson wants to play Magneto in X-Men spin-off

12 December 2009 6:46 PM, PST | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

The stars of the Twilight movies are obviously considering what they'll do after the final book, Breaking Dawn, is brought to the big screen - and action heroes (and villains) seem to be top of their lists.

Taylor Lautner has signed on to play the superhuman Max Steel, based on an action figure, comic and cartoon, while Kellan Lutz wants to play Captain America and also the brother of Matt Damon's Bourne character.

Now, Robert Pattinson has revealed that he too would like to play a comic book character.

During an interview, Pattinson was asked if he'd considered any superhero roles and replied: "Well, yeah, I think everyone wonders about that sometimes. My little cousin tells me I look like Magneto so I guess that's who I should probably play."

Magneto's a supervillain rather than a hero, of course, but Pattinson may have to wait a while. The 20th Century »

Robert Pattinson Believes He Should Be Magneto

11 December 2009 7:28 PM, PST | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

After portraying a vampire in "Twilight" and its sequel, Robert Pattinson has considered about playing a superhero. According to Comic Book Movie, when the British actor was interviewed by Frank Boyle, he admitted that he wants to be Magneto, a villain character with the power of magnetism from "X-Men" world.

"Well yeah [laughs], I think everyone wonders about that sometimes," he said when asked about whether or not he ever thought about playing a superhero in the future. He then added, "My little cousin tells me I look like Magneto so I guess thats who I should probably play [laughs]."

Unfortunately, Pattinson may have no chance to offer himself to play his dream character anytime soon as the film, "Magneto", is reportedly at the back of Marvel's queue. Though David Goyer has written the script for the film, producer Lauren Shuler Donner said, "I'm not sure that film is going to be made. »

Goyer Wants Magneto On The Back Burner

10 November 2009 3:56 PM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

I could write an essay on everything that was wrong with X-Men Origins: Wolverine. As a comic book film, it ranks somewhere between the never-meant-to-be-released Fantastic Four movie from 1994 and the straight-to-video Captain America movie from 1990. There was simply nothing there to enjoy. That opinion solidified, the entire time the Wolverine origin was being punted around, a Magneto back story was also in the works, but it now seems that it will be a few more years before we can facepalm while attending another X-Men related disaster. In an interview with MTV, writer David Goyer (who ranges from Batman Begins to Jumper) has backed recent statements by producer Lauren Shuler Donner, saying that Fox is a bit confused where to go with the franchise, and that the project should be placed on the back burner. Goyer also seemed to give the impression that he no longer cares much about the »
