Movie Review: I Will Always Love You (2006) by Len Bourret (Copyright 2007)
Link: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0497777/
The film, I Will Always Love You, is the kind of movie that has become non-existent in the U.S. It is the kind of film that Hollywood used to make. It is not frothy or soapy, but is a true picture of some opposite-sex and same-gender relationships. It is the story of a person who is, at least initially, so ashamed of his partner that he refuses to disclose his relationship to his parents and significant others, and is unwilling to make a long-term commitment to a person he claims to truly love. This is the kind of film that I wish June Allyson, before her death, had starred in. Supporting Lauren Bacall's complaint, I believe that television has led to the destruction of films in the U.S. Movie production companies seem to have been taken over by people who know nothing about the making of films, or who only know about making cheap, run-of-the-mill made- for-television kind of movies. This film actually has a happy ending, instead of the usual we-are-doomed, negative kind of ending. The film offers hope, positivity, and the kind of escapism to render pleasant dreams and something to reach for. Whatsmore, the film gives us dynamic acting, rather than a dependence on animation or special effects. It is the kind of film that I strongly recommend that Lauren Bacall, and those remaining from Hollywood's golden era, to ferret out. It appears that only filmmakers, outside of the U.S., are in the know about what really makes a great movie. The U.S. seems to have lost the art of film-making, and sorely needs to re-learn how to make a movie. Audiences need more than harsh, reality films and movies that offer only shattered dreams. This film is reminiscent of The Graduate, and shows two people who learn what real love is all about. They both learn about making a long-term commitment, and giving each other dignity and respect. It is a film that I am not ashamed to see, nor would I be ashamed to encourage others to see. I give this film my highest rating, 10 out of 10. If not a must-see, it is certainly a should-see film. Bring your hankie. The film is a tear jerker, but it will make you leap in tears of joy. I Will Always Love You is highly recommended!
