• Originally Jorge Garcia was attached to play Harry Knowles, but scheduling conflicts with "Lost" (2004) caused him to turn down the role. Then, Kevin Smith stepped in and was reportedly very enthusiastic, but some last-minute editing for Clerks II (2006) forced him to step down.
  
  
• The scene with the "Star Trek" (1966) fans in full costume dedicating the Captain James T. Kirk birthplace statue as they confront the Star Wars fans was shot on location in the Town Square Park Plaza of Las Vegas, New Mexico. You can see the historic Plaza Hotel in the background in certain shots. This spot is also roughly where the Cuban commander and Russian general are standing when the storefront explodes in Red Dawn (1984) .

• William Katt, whose scene was deleted and re-shot but still available in the deleted scenes portion of the DVD, would have provided another tie-in to Star Wars (1977) had it remained in the movie as Katt auditioned for the part of Luke Skywalker.

• The original release date was set to be in 2006. It was then pushed back to February 2007, then August 2007, then January 2008 and after the final cut was screened at San Diego Comic Con in July 2008, it was announced it was supposed to be released in September 2008. Then it was once again pushed back to November 2008 until it was finally (and very limitedly) released in February 2009.
  
  
• In summer 2007, the Weinstein Company decided to reshoot scenes for the movie, about one and a half year after the original shooting wrapped. The Weinstein Company planned to do reshoots, because they wanted a comedy that appealed to the masses, and especially a younger audience. Harvey Weinstein felt that Kyle Newman's original movie version did not fulfill this. Therefore he ordered the reshoots.
  
  
• A original version of Kyle Newman's version of the movie, without any reshoots, was screened at Star Wars Celebration Europe in 2007.
  
  
• The "Fanboys" theatrical release poster (the unidentified male in a knit shirt looking toward his right shoulder in a Darth Vader helmet, against an orange sunburst background) is a spoof of the theatrical release poster for The 40 Year Old Virgin (2005) (with 'Steve Carrell' appearing in similar clothing and posing against a similar background), the idea being conveyed that fan boys are the quintessential "40-year-old virgins".
  
  
• The music in the film is credited to Mark Mothersbaugh. Mothersbaugh is the vocalist for, and founding member of, the New-Wave band Devo.
  
  

• SPOILER: In the original plot, Linus was battling cancer and wouldn't live long enough to see the new Star Wars-movie in its theatrical release and therefore the friends want to get a copy of it. Producer Harvey Weinstein opposed this version and re-cut the original removing all references to cancer. Fans were so enraged about this, that they threatened to boycott Superhero Movie (2008), another Weinstein Co. project. Linus's cancer was not removed from the final version of the film.
  
  
• SPOILER: Although original director Kyle Newman was brought back to the editing room after re-shoots were done by Steven Brill and the final cut included the cancer storyline, which The Weistein Company actually wanted to be erased from the movie, the movie that was screened in theaters is still not Kyle Newman's original version of the movie.
  
  
• SPOILER: A scene that was present in Kyle Newman's original version of the movie, but is absent from the final cut, features Linus who accepts his fate and throws the pills given to him by the Doctor into a canyon.
