Story of Gears of War Movie Not Following Games?

8 December 2009 9:22 PM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

We’ve not heard too much about the anticipated live-action adaptation of the Gears of War video game franchise, but way back in February Screen Rant reported that Len Wiseman (Underworld, Live Free or Die Hard) would be directing the Gears of War feature film and co-writing the screenplay alongside Chris Morgan (Wanted, Fast & Furious).

Unfortunately, Wiseman also said he knows little about video games himself – A red flag considering all video game movies tend to fall short in quality because movie studios cannot/do not replicate and/or recognize the important parts of a video game, its story and the experience it generates.

Much more recently, in October we found out that Billy Ray, who wrote State of Play and Breach, is writing the Gears of War script for New Line and that was the last we heard… until now.

Paul W.S. Anderson Eyes Castlevania (Again)

21 November 2009 7:32 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Castlevania is a movie I do not hold high expectations for. Besides the fact that it is a video game adaptation, it seems to be going through development issues with a continuous set of director changes.

In January, Screen Rant reported that James Wan (Saw franchise) would be co-writing and directing and adaptation of the popular video game franchise, taking over from Paul W.S. Anderson (Death Race) as the writer/director and then Sylvain White (The Losers) who took the helm after Anderson.

After the studio decision to go with Wan, we’ve now come full circle and Paul W.S. Anderson is again set to direct. We don’t know yet how long this may last as in the summer, they were still promoting Wan and the plans for the film at San Diego Comic-Con.

Paul W. S. Anderson Wants to Mess Up More Video Game Movies

16 November 2009 2:38 AM, PST | HugAZombie | See recent HugAZombie news »

ShockTillYouDrop visited the set of Resident Evil: Afterlife where they spoke with producer Jeremy Bolt and were informed that Afterlife writer/director Paul W. S. Anderson still has a Castlevania adaptation on his slate but is awaiting a script.

That's not the only video game that Anderson and Bolt would like to exploit. Bolt admitted that the pair "would like to adapt" Konami's Metal Gear Solid for Columbia Pictures as well.

For better or worse, Anderson has been involved in 3 Resident Evil movies with Afterlife on the way. Should Anderson really get a shot at another video game adaptation? Much less two? Considering the biggest criticism of his Resident Evils has been their lack of adherence to the games, hasn't he done enough already?

Not if Anderson has a chance. Of course, up next for Anderson is a 3-D Three Musketeers. Does that make Metal Gear Solid fans beather easier? »

The Other Paul Anderson Now Directing 'Castlevania'?

15 November 2009 1:06 AM, PST | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

It's a real shame that Castlevania has become such a troubled production. It's a cool enough video game to make the transition to the big screen, but it could be on its third director in about 18 months.

At first, Sylvain White (Stomp the Yard) was attached to direct...and then the project kind of went away. Then earlier this year, original Saw director James Wan threw himself at the project with Paul W.S. Anderson producing. We wrote a little bit about that in July, with Wan saying, "I'll be working on the script with a writer to give it a new spin, different to the previous versions. This will have my stamp on it, which Konami is very excited about."

Or not. Shock Till You Drop quotes producer Jeremy Bolt as indicating that Anderson will be directing and he's waiting for yet another script. I wonder how much all this indecision has cost the producers. »

Paul W.S. Anderson Circling 'Castlevania' and 'Metal Gear Solid'

13 November 2009 11:59 PM, PST | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

Paul W.S. Anderson, who is currently shooting "Resident Evil: Afterlife", has planned to keep himself busy after wrapping the movie. His partner in "Resident Evil", producer Jeremy Bolt, recently told press that the helmer, who has been set to produce "The Three Musketeers", is circling two upcoming movie projects.

According to Bolt, Anderson has once again eyed the helmer position for "Castlevania", in which James Wan has been attached to direct. Additionally, he has put his name in the unofficial bidding for directing "Metal Gear Solid".

"Castlevania", based on classic video game with the same title, will follow Transylvanian knight who leads his men into a gothic castle to seek refuge from the Turkish army. The knights soon discover the castle is controlled by the original vampire. Paul W.S. Anderson will serve both as producer and writer of the 2010 movie.

As for "Metal Gear Solid", the action sci-fi movie will »

Will Paul Ws Anderson Helm 'Castlevania'?

13 November 2009 9:10 PM, PST | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

The Castlevania film, based upon the Konami game, seems to be going through a difficult birthing process. After an announced start date passed and original director Sylvain White (Stomp the Yard) moved on to other things, James Wan (Saw) signed on to co-write and direct the project, with Paul Ws Anderson producing. "I'm very fresh on this project, so its early stages and I'm still trying to work things out, but the producers love my vision for it," Wan told the media.

Then news about the project all but dried up. Until today. On the Toronto set of Resident Evil: Afterlife, producer Jeremy Bolt told Styd that Anderson is once again circling Castlevania and is currently waiting for the script.

No word, however, as to what role Anderson will play in the film: producer, director...or perhaps both.

Bolt added that Anderson is also looking to adapt Konami's 'Metal Gear Solid' for the big screen. »

Paul W.S. Anderson Returning to 'Castlevania'?

13 November 2009 8:55 AM, PST | bloody-disgusting.com | See recent Bloody-Disgusting.com news »

Odd news from the set of Resident Evil: Afterlife as Bloody Disgusting's Mike Pereira sent in a small news bite that has me scratching my head. Resident Evil producer Jeremy Bolt tells press that writer/director/producer Paul W.S. Anderson is once again circling Castlevania, along with the feature film adaptation of Metal Gear Solid. Why so odd? This past July Saw co-creator James Wan was attached to the project that would bring Simon Belmont to the big screen to battle Dracula and other ghouls. We'll see if we can't get word from Wan. Personally, I'll cry if Anderson goes back to this project. »

ShockTillYouDrop.com is on the Toronto set of Resident Evil: Afterlife where producer Jeremy Bolt told us this morning that Paul W.S. Anderson is still circling video game adaptation Castlevania at Rogue Pictures and that they are waiting on a script. This summer, James Wan was attached to direct the movie based on the Konami game, but we haven't heard much about his involvement. Bolt added that he and Anderson would like to adapt Konami's Metal Gear Solid for the big screen at Columbia Pictures. Stay tuned for possibly more from the set. »

‘Buffy’ & ‘Mad Men’ Writer To Pen ‘Fright Night’ Remake

12 November 2009 10:49 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Back in March Screen Rant reported on yet another horror remake to be put into the works with Dreamworks’ Fright Night. At the time the producers had been put in place but no writer. Jump forward 8 months and a writer has been found in the form of Marti Noxon, who’s a regular writer on AMC’s classy Mad Men, as well as having worked on the hit vampire series, Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

The original Fright Night was written and directed by Tom Holland (Child’s Play, The Langoliers) back in 1985, and was about a teenager (William Ragsdale) who discovers his new next door neighbor (Chris Sarandon) is a vampire. However, he’s the only one who knows it, as no one will believe him.

I remember the original Fright Night pretty well, although I can’t seem to recall the comedy element from the “horror-comedy” label that’s »

The Three Musketeers To Get The 3D Treatment

2 September 2009 10:18 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Will anything be safe from the 3D makeover? With the way things are going, it doesn’t look like it. We learn today that Paul W.S. Anderson (Death Race, Event Horizon) will direct a new adaptation of Alexandre DumasThe Three Musketeers - in 3D no less. He has co-written the script with Andrew Davies (Bridget Jones’s Diary), a script which is said to “modernize” the musketeers.

Whether justified or not, “Oh dear…” is my first thought…

This new adaptation of The Three Musketeers can be assumed to have nothing to do with the one we heard about last June, which was planned at the time by Millenium Films. This one is being produced by Impact PicturesJeremy Bolt and Constantin Film’s Robert Kulzer (both companies are financing the project), with Anderson himself co-producing.

There has been many-an-adaptation of The Three Musketeers over the years, with cinematic visions »

Anderson: 'Castlevania will be like game'

19 August 2009 10:56 AM, PDT | digitalspy | See recent digitalspy news »

Paul W.S. Anderson has claimed that the film version of Castlevania will remain faithful to the video game. Saw co-creator James Wan took over the reigns as director on the vampire project after it was shelved in May. Original helmer Anderson then assumed the position of producer on the movie and said that his replacement is currently writing the screenplay. He told MTV: "There'll be the whip and there'll be creatures. James is doing a pass on the script to put himself into it with the tricks and the traps, which he is really good (more) »

Castlevania – More Than Just Creatures

19 August 2009 5:48 AM, PDT | FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news »

Producer/Co-writer Paul W.S. Anderson spoke to MTV Movies recently about the highly anticipated (yet troubled) Castlevania. The film will be based on the computer game of the same name, released by Nintendo in 1986.

The project has recently attracted a lot of criticism due to the fact it found itself in the metaphorical “development hell” not long after Anderson was originally set to direct. The project has come a long way since then however, having undergone a rewrite and a change in director which saw “Saw” mastermind James Wan taking his place in the chair. MTV asked Anderson about the changes to the script, and tried to find out what we can expect from this reinvigorated Castlevania:

“There’ll be the whip and there’ll be creatures,” Anderson said, referring to Simon Belmont’s weapon of choice and the mythical beasts he battles as he makes his way through »

'Castlevania' Is More Than Just About the Creatures

18 August 2009 11:20 PM, PDT | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

Producer/co-writer Paul W.S. Anderson recently told MTV about what to expect from his upcoming "Castlevania". Though the adaptation of the 1980's Nintendo game is still likely to feature some characters from the original version, the filmmaker said that the movie is more than just about the creatures.

"One of the things with 'Castlevania' is it's not just about the creatures but the environment trying to get to you as well," Anderson claimed. He further admitted the movie will feature some of the original version details, including "the whip", the weapon which is used by leading character Simon Belmont, and the "creatures", which Belmont encounters on his way through Dracula's castle.

In the interview, Anderson also praised the work of James Wan in writing the script for "Castlevania", saying "James is doing a pass on the script to put himself into it with the tricks and the traps, »

Paul Ws Anderson Talks Castlevania Movie

18 August 2009 6:00 PM, PDT | WorstPreviews.com | See recent Worst Previews news »

Paul Ws Anderson (Alien vs Predator) has been looking to bring the "Castlevania" video game to the big screen for years, but the writers' strike and the sale of Rogue Pictures kept putting the project on hold. Now, Anderson has signed "Saw" creator/director James Wan to re-write the script and helm the new movie. But don't expect a "Castlevania" film to appear in theaters any time soon. "[The project is in pre-pre-production [and no one is] exactly sure when it's going to shoot," said Anderson, adding that he still doesn't know whether the film will rely on CG effects or how close it will stick to the game. "We're still working on it, so I don't want to preempt that. We're just not there yet." He did, however, say that "there'll be the whip and there'll be creatures. James is doing a pass on the script to put himself into it with the tricks and the traps, which he is really good at. »

Castlevania update!

Right now, you might be thinking, "Yeah right, Castlevania is never going to come out." Okay, maybe you're right, but at least their still talking about it, well Paul W.S. Anderson is anyway. Paul W.S. Anderson Promises Vampire Whips and Horror Movie Traps In 'Castlevania'

18 August 2009 9:00 AM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Paul W.S. Anderson had serious ambitions when it came to his big screen adaptation of the ‘80s Nintendo game, “Castlevania.” It was going to span hundreds of years, from fifteenth century Transylvania to the European trenches of World War II, yet also would somehow still be an origin story focusing on the genesis of the feud between Dracula and the Belmonts, the family tasked with battling the vampire and his clan.

That was several years ago, before the writers’ strike and then the sale of Rogue Pictures interrupted Anderson’s plan to bring “Castlevania” to theaters. Now, with the script getting the rewrite treatment and a new director set to helm the flick, Anderson is considerably (and understandably) more tight-lipped when it comes to dishing out details, as MTV News discovered during a recent conversation.

“There’ll be the whip and there’ll be creatures,” Anderson said, referring to Simon »

Death Race Prequel On The Way

12 August 2009 7:34 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Shock Till You Drop is reporting that the 2008 Jason Statham high speed action-fest, Death Race, will be getting another movie. But not a sequel, no, the next Death Race will be a prequel. I guess we won’t be seeing Statham in this one, and not just because he’s got better things to do.

Director of the first Death Race, Paul W.S. Anderson, has already tapped writer Tony Giglio (Timber Falls, Chaos) to script the prequel, based on a story by Anderson. The film will be produced by Impact Pictures (a production outfit shared by Anderson and Jeremy Bolt), and word is it will delve into the past of the driver, Frankenstein.

The late-great David Carradine played Frankenstein in the original Death Race 2000 back in the ’70s, with him doing a brief voice appearance as the character in the remake before Statham’s character, Jensen Ames, replaced him in the driver’s seat. »

Director Tapped For ‘The Orphanage’ Remake

5 August 2009 8:33 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

It’s being reported that a director has been found for New Line’s English-language remake of The Orphanage, in the form of Larry Fessenden. Guillermo del Toro (who produced the original Spanish version) is producing and has co-written the script with Fessenden. A lead actress is currently being searched for.

The original version of The Orphanage (which is only a couple of years old) followed a woman who moves in with her husband and son to a house that used to be the orphanage that she grew up in. Before long her son starts to act strange, communicating with an imaginary friend. I’ll refrain from saying more for Spoiler reasons, but let’s just say it mixes drama and horror fantastically well.

Fessenden is well established on the indie-horror circuit, as an actor, producer and director. His IMDb resume includes the likes of The Last Winter, The Roost, »

‘Timecrimes’ Director To Helm ‘Gangland’

31 July 2009 12:12 PM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Timecrimes director, Nacho Vigalondo, will helm an action-comedy called Gangland. The film is based on an idea by Vigalondo, will be written by Pat Healy (HBO’s In Treatment) and will be produced by Mandate Pictures and Steven Zallian via their Film Rites partnership.

Gangland’s story revolves around a group of video game developers who unwisely promise the most realistic game ever made, entitled Gangland (hence the name of the film). The group soon find themselves having to survive on their own wits as they have to deal with a real-life criminal underworld.

Sounds fun! I’m guessing in their desperation to deliver what they promise these game developers steep themselves in real criminal life and danger, which will most likely lead to more harm than good.

For those of you not up on your foreign cinema, you may not know who Vigalondo is. »

'Resident Evil' Producers Unlock the Magic of 'The Warded Man'

28 July 2009 11:24 PM, PDT | bloody-disgusting.com | See recent Bloody-Disgusting.com news »

While Paul W.S. Anderson might not be the best filmmaker, he is one helluva producer. While he has Pandorum arriving in theaters this September, he is also producing the Castlevania video game adaptation (with James Wan at the helm) and Akula, which will be directed by Saw II-IV helmer Darren Lynn Bousman. With an obvious love for the genre, it's nice to see someone getting some fresh faces behind the camera on some major genre pics. An exciting announcement was made this evening as Filmmaker Paul W. S. Anderson and longtime producing partner Jeremy Bolt, the duo behind the moneymaking "Resident Evil" franchise, have picked up film rights to Peter V. Brett's debut fantasy novel The Warded Man. »
