• Project was originally titled "Fred Claus", but was changed due to a potential rights issue. It was then retitled "Joe Claus." After the rights were cleared, the title returned to "Fred Claus."

• David Dobkin was originally going to direct I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry (2007), but dropped out to work with Vince Vaughn in Fred Claus (2007). The two originally worked together on Clay Pigeons (1998) and again in Wedding Crashers (2005).
  
  
• Kevin Spacey's character Clyde asks for (and later receives) a Superman cape from Santa Claus. Spacey played Lex Luthor in Superman Returns (2006). In that film, in an idea lifted from Doc Savage: The Man of Bronze (1975), the Kryptonian had a base of operations at the North Pole, just as Claus does in this film.
