Blu-Ray Review: Tiresome ‘Four Christmases’ is Four Too Many

25 November 2009 12:02 PM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – How has Vince Vaughn become one of the most boring actors in America? It has little to do with his performances and everything to do with his career choices. Sure, Vaughn has pretty much made a habit out of playing the exact same guy since “Wedding Crashers”: a fast-talking, self-absorbed, overgrown adolescent whose funniest quips are delivered under the breath and between punch-lines. Since you’re never sure what will come out of his mouth next, he’s consistently entertaining to watch, but the vehicles he chooses have become increasingly uninspired.

Blu-Ray Rating: 1.5/5.0

Four Christmases” is a particularly obnoxious holiday offering, primarily because its filmmakers are convinced that they’ve created something that people can relate to. The film centers on a couple who routinely make up excuses to avoid spending the holidays with family. But when they enter the airport on their way to Fiji (foreshadowing Vaughn »

MoviesOnline caught up this weekend with Joel at the Los Angeles press day for his new film, "Ninja Assassin.” The film is directed by James McTeigue from a screenplay by Matthew Sand and J. Michael Straczynski and »

Get ready for Frat Boy

20 November 2009 12:51 AM, PST | TotalFilm | See recent TotalFilm news »

Warner Brothers has brought Wedding Crashers director David Dobkin aboard its new comedy Frat Boy. The high (or should that be low brow?) concept pitch sees a baby abandoned on the steps of a frat house on an American campus and ends up being raised by the various members of the fraternity until he's old enough to go out into the world. According to Pajiba's source, the film is described as "think Tommy Boy meets Old School." Do we have to? Given that Dobkin's guy-centric hits (well Crashes was a hit, while Fred Claus...

Chevy Chase and Beverly D’Angelo Reunite For Another Vacation

19 November 2009 6:32 PM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Chevy Chase and Beverly D'Angelo will be reprising their roles as Clark and Ellen Griswold from the National Lampoon's Vacation movies, but not for another big screen sequel (not yet, at least...). You might recall that last month we told you that New Line/Warner Bros had signed Wedding Crashers and Fred Claus director David Dobkin to produce and possibly direct a new film in the National Lampoon's Vacation series which would follow Rusty Griswold, the son of Clark Griswold, who is now a father in his own right and takes his family on a, you guessed it, road trip vacation. Although New Line/WB hopes to sign Chase and D’Angelo to return as grandparents in the new film, no deals are in place. So if not the big screen, when, where and why? Details after the jump. The Griswolds will be reuniting insead for an advertising campaign to »

Have you ever felt 'betrayed' by an actor?

10 November 2009 8:30 AM, PST | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

In a new W magazine cover story interview, Demi Moore speaks candidly about her position in Hollywood (which is currently on the indie scene, see: a role opposite Parker Posey in the upcoming Happy Tears). She also talks about her decision to "step back" and semi-retire to Idaho after starring in and producing G.I. Jane. "I think G.I. Jane got hit because I was paid $12 million to do Striptease,” Moore says. “In a sense, Striptease was a film where women felt I betrayed them. G.I. Jane is a film where men felt I betrayed them. The focus went on that paycheck. »

Vince Vaughn on Couples Retreat

13 October 2009 10:29 AM, PDT | www.canmag.com | See recent CanMag news »

Vince Vaughn and his comedy cohorts have developed a style where they take realistic premises and banter them out to ridiculous extremes. It began with Swingers and really came into the mainstream with Old School and Wedding Crashers. After The Breakup, Fred Claus and Four Christmases, Vaughn explained how his style applies to his latest film, Couples Retreat.

Vince Vaughn on a Couples Retreat

.The job of an actor is to look like you.re not acting,. Vaughn said. .Sometimes I think people reward people who go to extreme emotions. I can look at it, and other actors can look at it, and go, .I can see the work in it,. but people go, .That must be powerful because you.re crying.. But, that would make everyone.s crazy aunt a great actor. So, I.ve always felt the real thing to do is make it effortless. Like any performer in music, »

Box Office - 'Couples Retreat' Cruises to Easy Win

11 October 2009 10:18 AM, PDT | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

We hinted at this kind of performance yesterday, and really, the numbers now are quite staggering. Couples Retreat, the week's only new movie to pop up in a significant amount of theaters, was far and away the top choice of moviegoers, showing no decline worth mentioning on Saturday and Sunday. It started the weekend with $12 million and change and managed to earn right around $35 million for the weekend, according to Box Office Mojo. Despite bad reviews, the Vince Vaughn comedy clearly knew its target demo, saturated the marketplace over the past couple of weeks, and is now reaping the rewards.

For Vaughn, it's another great opening weekend that proves he's still one of the best bets in Hollywood. Fred Claus has been his less successful film in the past five years, and even that movie made $100 million worldwide. However, with a $70 million budget (plus marketing costs, which were considerable here »

'Vacation' Gets Back to Work

7 October 2009 12:49 PM, PDT | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

If you're interested in hurling bad fruit at the studios over once again dusting off a classic from years gone by, the line forms to the left.

New Line is making "a sequel of sorts" to National Lampoon's Vacation, which will be produced by David Dobkin, and The Hollywood Reporter says he might also direct. Dobkin has one undeniable success on his resume - Wedding Crashers - but Fred Claus, Clay Pigeons, and Shanghai Knights don't add up to very much. Still, provided a good story can be developed, Dobkin could be a decent choice.

Speaking of the story, it's now Rusty's turn to load up the family roadster, and there will apparently be opportunities for Chevy Chase and Beverly D'Angelo to make cameos, but nothing's set in stone. Would you want Anthony Michael Hall back as Rusty? Technically, it wouldn't matter since Hall was only Rusty in the original »

National Lampoon's Vacation time being booked again

7 October 2009 7:50 AM, PDT | Corona's Coming Attractions | See recent Corona's Coming Attractions news »

Warner Bros. is interested in resurrecting their National Lampoon's Vacation movie franchise by making a direct sequel to the original 1983 comedy. As the studio (and its New Line division) owns the copyright to the characters and premise, National Lampoon is not involved in the development of the new Vacation nor is the magazine's name being used in the development of the project.

The idea began when New Line exec Sam Brown started to comb through the studio's archive of intellectual properties and remembered the good times he had watching the original Vacation. After getting the Ok from its parent division, New Line is now developing a story concept based around the son of Chevy Chase's character, now a grown man with a family of his own. Recalling the time his Dad loaded up the lime green station wagon and headed out to Wally World, Rusty Griswald wants to take »

New National Lampoon’s Vacation Sequel In The Works

6 October 2009 8:57 PM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

No, no, no No No No Noooooooo. I start overacting like Shia Labeouf when I learn news about Hollywood remaking or sequelizing movies from my childhood. I'm not an anti-sequel person, and in that area, I'm a lot more optimistic than most film fanatics. With the advances in technology and special effects, I understand the want  to update some of the big sci-fi and effects heavy classics (not that I agree, but I at least understand...) But some movies just need to be left alone: particularly dramas and comedies. The Karate Kid doesn't need a remake starring Will Smith's son and Jackie Chan, and Nation Lampoon's Vacation doesn't need another crappy sequel/spin-off.  New Line/Warner Bros has signed Wedding Crashers and Fred Claus director David Dobkin to produce and possibly direct a new film in the Vacation series. New Line has already developed a storyline, which they are »

An Old Man Version Of The Hangover: Yes, It's Happening

21 August 2009 11:13 AM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

There's a Hangover 2 in the works, that much we know. And there's bound to be countless more dude-driven comedies, just like Old School inspired its own set of imitators. But none of that knowledge prepared me for the existence of Last Vegas a comedy about four guys who take a trip to Vegas when one of them is about to get married. Oh, but this time in they're in their 60s! So replace the roofie jokes with Viagra jokes, and we'll be all set. Dan Fogelman, who wrote both Bolt and Fred Claus, wrote the screenplay for this, and Peter Chelsom, who most recently directed Hannah Montana: The Movie, has signed on as well, according to Variety. Chelsom obliquely acknowledged similarities to The Hangover, but pretty much summed it up with his description of the film to Variety: "These are four guys from Coney Island, who, when we meet them, »

And Starring Paul Giamatti As Himself

11 August 2009 11:47 AM, PDT | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

Like the titular actor in "Being John Malkovich," Paul Giamatti plays a version of himself in "Cold Souls" -- "Paul Giamatti," an ever-so-serious thespian with a thriving stage and screen career who's so weighed down by the lead role in a theater production of Chekhov's "Uncle Vanya" that he follows up on an ad offering the lightening of one's metaphorical load by the removal and storage of the soul. And like "Malkovich," "Cold Souls" gets a lot of mileage out of its playfulness with an actor's public persona -- in fact, writer/director Sophie Barthes had never met Giamatti when she decided to make him the lead character in her first film. She felt obliged to approach him about the project when they met, fortuitously, at the Nantucket Film Festival, though she admits, "I was mortified. I'm going to go see this man and tell him I wrote a screenplay »

Final Michael Jackson Rehearsals Highlight Today's Dailies -- 8/10/09

10 August 2009 6:20 PM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

-- No tricks here, Michael Jackson fans are getting a Halloween treat when Sony Pictures puts out a digestible version of the much-discussed final rehearsal footage. In a throwback to "Captain Eo," select bits will be presented in 3-D. Speaking of "Eo," wouldn't it be nifty of some of those 3-D clips turned out to be from the Disney attraction? The words "career retrospective" are mentioned after all. (MTV)

-- It still feels so strange to know with absolute certainty that a "Wall Street" sequel is happening. It is though, and the "Money Never Sleeps" cast just got bigger. Frank Langella is in, playing a seasoned broker who mentors Shia Labeouf's young up-and-comer. The role is said to play "a major part in the film's plot." (Variety)

-- Kathryn Bigelow and Mark Boal, the writer/director team behind "The Hurt Locker" who have enjoyed a solid limited release run, »

Ferrell and Dobkin Bail in Neighborhood Watch… Nothing to See Here

3 August 2009 11:45 PM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

The day has finally arrived. We got a scoop from the Orlando Sentinel. Will Ferrell and David Dobkin, director of Wedding Crashers and the ill-fated Fred Claus, have bailed on the no-longer-starring-Will-Ferrell vehicle Neighborhood Watch. The film was ditched by these Hollywood comedy darlings, because Dobkin's most recent script revisions couldn't get past the apparently schizophrenic deciders over at Fox. Meh, whatever. Neighborhood Watch sounds like a sloppy combination of City Slickers, The Burbs, Hot Fuzz, and that wierd sewer monster Scully-and-Mulder-pose-as-a-Stepford-couple episode of "X Files", anyway. We'll see how and if this puppy turns out. We'll see. Is that you looking at me through my curtains, or what? »

Daily news dose: Will Ferrell leaves 'Neighborhood;' Could Katie Holmes star in 'Sex and the City 2'?

2 August 2009 10:27 PM, PDT | screeninglog.com | See recent screeninglog news »

Here's your dose of film news for August 3, 2009:

Will Ferrell was attached to star in and David Dobkin ("Fred Claus") was set to direct 20th Century Fox's comedy "Neighborhood Watch," but both exited the project, according to Variety. The film follows a city guy who moves to suburbia, joins the neighborhood watch, and quickly uncovers a major conspiracy.

• This is just a rumor at this point, but according to Tvnz, Katie Holmes has been approached to star in "Sex and the City 2." Apparently, Holmes would play big-time company executive who will clash with Kim Cattrall's Samantha Jones. I'll believe it when I see her on the screen.

• Earlier this year we found out Fox is prepping "Hitman 2," and according to ComingSoon, Timothy Olyphant said he may return as Agent 47 if the studio wanted him back. "If they want me to do another one, I supposed they could have me, »

Ferrell and Dobkin Say Goodbye to Neighborhood

2 August 2009 10:07 PM, PDT | TheMovingPicture.net | See recent TheMovingPicture news »

Will Ferrell has dropped out of the Fox comedy Neighborhood Watch. Director David Dobkin, who most recently helmed Fred Claus and the box office hit Wedding Crashers, in which Ferrell made a cameo appearance, has also left the project. Watch centers on an urbanite that gets more than he bargained for when he moves to the suburbs and joins the neighborhood watch, with a sci-fi element included via a plot line about aliens. The duo were attached to the comedy in the spring, and Dobkin had recently submitted revisions to Jared Stern's script. Dobkin’s other directing credits include Shanghai Knights and Clay Pigeons. No reason was given for Ferrell and Dobkin’s departure. Ferrell, whose recent Land of the Lost was a summer misfire, has a role in the upcoming Jeremy Piven comedy The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard. He’s also developing the buddy flick The Other Guys, »

New 'Couples Retreat' Trailer with Vince Vaughn

1 July 2009 11:29 AM, PDT | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

With the fairly surprising box office bonanza that was Four Christmases, producers rushed into action to recapture that ol' Vince Vaughn comedy magic. For a while, Vaughn's stuff has been pretty sub-par, but the hope is if you surround him with a lot of talent maybe the old Vince - the Wedding Crashers and not Fred Claus Vince - would come back to us.

Couples Retreat certainly should give Vaughn fans hope. In addition to reuniting with Jon Favreau, the new comedy co-stars Jason Bateman, Kristin Davis, Kristen Bell, Malin Akerman, and Faizon Love. The story has promise, too, and even if it doesn't sound like much, remember the basic premise to The Hangover doesn't exactly leap off the page.

In the film, four couples head to the islands for a big vacation, but one of the four tandems is there to work on their relationship, and what the other »
