He conquered the world with The Lord Of The Rings trilogy. But what about the first few films from Peter Jackson?
At the 2004 Academy Awards, The Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King swept the board with 11 statuettes, equalling the records previously set by Ben-Hur and Titanic. When collecting the award for Best Picture, director Peter Jackson made a passing reference to the two films with which he had started his career in the late 1980s - Bad Taste and Meet The Feebles - commenting that they had been “wisely overlooked by the Academy at the time”.
Despite Jackson’s dismissal of his own early work, these films represent more than a curious historical footnote; they are the first steps from one of the most important blockbuster film-makers of the last two decades. When viewed from the lofty gaze of hindsight, they are not only...

In the latest episode of Adam Savage's "One Day Builds" we get to watch him craft King Arthur's sword Excalibur! It's based on the design of the sword from the classic 1981 fantasy film Excalibur and as you'll see it turns out beautiful.
Using the skills he learned from Weta Workshop's master swordsmith Peter Lyon, Adam takes on a One Day Build project he's been waiting to do his entire life: make King Arthur's sword from Excalibur!
Building this sword was no easy task, but Savage did an incredible and impressive job. It's so much fun watching this guy work! I also love how happy and excited he was when he finished it. ...

You might remember a post we ran that featured Adam Savage going to the Weta Workshop to see how they made the Thermoptic suit from Ghost in the Shell. Now the Mythbusters star is going even deeper into the complex world of props contained in Ghost in the Shell. Savage visits Weta Workshop to get up close with some of the practical props the effects studio made for the film. Weta Workshop’s Richard Taylor shows Adam the mechanical geisha masks and animatronic puppets his team created, and how Weta Workshop used new fabrication and design technologies to make these props

In his role as emcee of all things geeky, former Mythbuster/current Tested host Adam Savage released a new video of his visit to the props department of the upcoming Ghost In The Shell live action adaptation. The film’s impressive props were created by Weta Workshop, the New Zealand company famous for its work on the Lord Of The Rings franchise. And Weta founder/creative director Richard Taylor is on hand to talk Savage through the creation of the film’s robotic geishas, which were featured in the most recent trailer.
What comes through most clearly during the tour is just how much attention Weta pays to detail. That includes both the aesthetics of the designs as well as their functionality. For instance, the rigid, robotic geisha masks were designed to be as comfortable as possible for the actors wearing them. They can be taken off easily so the...

Adam Savage Visits Weta to Show Us Some Cool Ghost In The Shell Geisha Props and Animatronic Puppets
Adam Savage was invited to Weta Workshop to check out some of the awesome work that they did for the upcoming adaptation of Ghost in the Shell. While there he talked to Weta's Richard Taylor, who showed off what they came up with for the creepy robotic geisha that we've seen in the trailers. What's so cool about these is that they are all practical effects and props with mechanical geisha masks and animatronic puppets! It also shows how Weta Workshop used new fabrication and design technologies to make these props possible.
I love seeing this kind of stuff! Weta has done some incredibly cool work here, and I think you're gonna like what they have to show off. After seeing the stuff in this video I want to see even more of the creative work they did for the film! ...

"This may not look like a great deal of complexity to your viewers..." Weta Workshop is one of the coolest places, along with Ilm. As a preview for the upcoming live-action Ghost in the Shell movie, Tested host Adam Savage went down to New Zealand for a personal tour of the Weta Workshop to get a closer look at the various props and practical effects and other toys used to make the movie. This video focuses entirely on the robot geisha seen in the trailers, with the face that opens up. Savage talks with Weta's Richard Taylor about creating the robot geisha and the various development processes. I wish there was more in this video about other props and pieces from the movie, but hopefully we'll see more of them later. Take a look below. Here's the video from Adam Savage's Tested going behind-the-scenes of Ghost in the Shell,...

There are precious few things in this world which cannot be improved by a measure of silliness – and Zhang Yimou’s not entirely historically accurate story of a legendary alien battle at The Great Wall of China is no exception. In combining his trademark gravity defying fight sequences with thousands of green blooded CGI monsters, Zhang has contrarily crafted a very beautiful and wildly expensive B-Movie.
William (Matt Damon) and Tovar (Pedro Pascal) are soldiers for hire, wandering the wilds of China in search of a source of black powder – gunpowder – to sell to the highest bidder upon their return to the west. When their group is ambushed late one night William’s mercenary training ensures the pair’s safety and grants them a gory and unusual get-out-of-certain-death-free card as they stumble across a secret army preparing for the fight of their lives.

I recently had the chance to take a vacation to New Zealand, and while I was there, I visited Peter Jackson's Weta Workshop and took a tour of the place. It was incredible (as you might imagine), but unfortunately, they wouldn't allow me to take any photos or video inside the space. Adam Savage and his Tested team recently went to Wellington and visited as well, but it looks like they didn't have the same restrictions I did. While they apparently weren't able to give everyone a look at the main floor of the workshop (yet, anyway), they did manage to get a bunch of access to some side areas and talk to its employees about sculpting, prosthetics, model painting, and more. This may be the closest you get without flying across the world and visiting Weta yourself!

What's more precious than The Lord of the Rings Trilogy? 15 years of it!
On December 19, 2001, The Fellowship of the Ring was released in theatres and ushered in a new era of the fantasy genre. An endeavour eluded by filmmakers for decades, J.R.R. Tolkien’s masterpiece was brought to life by director Peter Jackson and the trilogy has since become a staple in pop culture worldwide.
With a budget of close to $100M and a box office gross of over $800M, it should come as no surprise that Fellowship remains one of the most successful – and awarded – films of all time.

Towering over his victims with menacing horns and chains, the titular demonic monster in Michael Dougherty's Krampus made for a menacing cinematic creature, but his minions were equally eerie, and you can now collect a couple of them in scary, impeccably detailed statues from Weta Workshop.
Krampus Cherub Statue: "Krampus is coming, and he's left a very special delivery in a grimy sack at the front door. Don't bring it in because hidden inside are all manner of Christmas beasties, including a cherub who is anything but.
Close inspection reveals a cracked face, bloodshot eyes, sharp teeth, beastly eagle talons and clawed feet: details that cut right through this character's cute first appearances. Make no mistake, this not a creature you want to meet in the dark attic on a cold Christmas Eve.
Don't go up there.
This highly detailed collectible was crafted by Weta Workshop sculptor Jane Wenley.

Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok is still in its early days of production with just two weeks of principal photography completed on the Gold Coast of Australia, but the studio’s Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con next week should provide new details and more. In the meantime, we can speculate and envisage based on quotes from the cast and crew. Karl Urban, who will play Skurge the Executioner in Thor: Ragnarok, recently discussed his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut with IGN. The actor reassured that he’s shaving his head and bulking up for his Asgardian role, although the latter preparation may not be required. “The irony is that you won't actually see my body in this movie under the costume that I have,” he revealed, “but it's important for me to get into the zone and feel [the part].” As IGN pointed out, Karl Urban posted an image on Twitter last...

Paramount Pictures and DreamWorks Pictures have released the first photo of Scarlett Johansson as Major in their co-production live-action adaptation of Ghost in the Shell. Shooting has started in Wellington, New Zealand, and the press release came with this official synopsis:
Based on the internationally-acclaimed sci-fi property, “Ghost In The Shell” follows the Major, a special ops, one-of-a-kind human-cyborg hybrid, who leads the elite task force Section 9. Devoted to stopping the most dangerous criminals and extremists, Section 9 is faced with an enemy whose singular goal is to wipe out Hanka Robotic’s advancements in cyber technology.
I've never read the original manga series or seen the anime feature, so I'm going into this one with very little context. Hopefully director Rupert Sanders (Snow White and The Huntsman) will focus more heavily on the story this time around; I'm still interested in seeing him put his visual skills to good use,...
