Remember Jim Carrey in Liar, Liar, where he forces himself to tell the truth for 24 hours? Well, here Jim Carrey forces himself to answer yes to any request, for a year. Which is upping the ante somewhat, but doesn't make it a better film. This is a return to the manic, gurning, not-very-funny Carrey, as if The Truman Show, Eternal Sunshine etc hadn't happened. A Paranormal number of flops

New releases Me and Orson Welles, The Descent: Part 2 and The Box fail to offer much opposition as Paranormal Activity leapfrogs into top spot in its second week
For distributors with a new release this weekend, the only solace to be grasped at was that their movie hadn't done as badly as someone else's. As executives gathered at the annual British independent film awards in London on Sunday night, the talk was of how all the new films targeting adult audiences had flopped – the only differences were the degrees of failure.
Flop #1
Bottom of the pile of wide releases was Me and Orson Welles, which failed to crack a £1,000 screen average on 187 prints. Comparisons with Zac Efron's recent hits 17 Again (£2.56m debut) and High School Musical 3 (£8.41m including previews) are hardly fair, but his latest film's £166,000 opening confirms widely held suspicions that his many young fans wouldn't show

Demonstrating that direct-to-dvd releases can enjoy considerable success in their own right, given the proper kind of marketing, Disney's Santa Buddies: The Legend of Santa Paws debuted in fourth place on the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart last week. With many top retailers discounting DVD titles by half -- or more -- home video releases flew off the shelves, with many of them likely to end up under the Christmas tree in gift wrapping later this month. Warner Bros.' The Dark Knight, released over a year ago but priced below $10 in many retail outlets, returned to the chart in second place. So, too, did Paramount's Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa, which was released on DVD last February and which could also be found in stores deeply discounted to $10 or less. Home Media magazine estimated that about 25 million DVDs were sold over the Thanksgiving week.

Rumor has it, Victoria Adams will once again spread her wings in big screen. After playing herself in 1997 film "Spice World", the British star has been reported joining "Madagascar 3" to provide a new character's voice.
Talking about the reason why Adams decided to sign on for the animated movie project, a source close to the former Spice Girls member said, "It is like nothing she's done before. Her three boys loved the first two movies." However, it is not yet known whether or not the wife of footballer David Beckham will speak in her English accent for the third "Madagascar" film.
If the report is true, this will not be the first time Victoria Adams provides a voice for an animated project. She has lent her voice to Queen Amphitrite, a character in hit kids TV show "SpongeBob SquarePants", in an episode which is scheduled to be aired in summer

Victoria Beckham's Hollywood career is taking off - the fashion designer has landed a role in the next Madagascar movie.
The former Spice Girls star has previously made a cameo appearance in Ugly Betty and provided a voice-over for hit kids show Spongebob Squarepants.
Now Beckham has landed her first Hollywood role in the upcoming Madagascar 3, alongside Ben Stiller and David Schwimmer.
The 35 year old will reportedly voice a character in the animated film, which is due for release in 2012.
The first Madagascar movie, about a group of zoo animals accidentally shipped back to Africa, was an international hit on its release in 2005 and was followed by a successful sequel, Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa, in 2008.

“Carol” Has A Dickens Of A Time

Moviegoers were about as tight-fisted at the box office over the weekend as Ebenezer Scrooge was at the grindstone in his day. The top film, Disney's A Christmas Carol, which stars Jim Carrey as Scrooge and the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future, opened with an estimated $31 million, far below analysts' expectations of about $40-45 million -- and less than half what Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa earned when it opened with $63.1 million during the comparable weekend a year ago. But while most critics called the performance of the movie disappointing, particularly for a movie that was said to have cost close to $200 million, others pointed out that it took in more than Robert Zemeckis's previous motion-capture animation films, including The Polar Express, which opened with $23 million, and Beowulf, with $28 million. Besides, Disney apparently intends to milk it for another seven weekends before Christmas. "You know you're in for a marathon rather than a dash," Chuck Viane, Disney's president of domestic theatrical distribution, told Reuters. Slipping to second place was the Michael Jackson concert documentary This Is It, which dropped a moderate 39.7 percent to $14 million. (It continued to perform strongly overseas, however.) The comedy The Men Who Stare at Goats opened in third place with a better-than-expected $13.3 million. Another new film, The Fourth Kind, followed with $12.5 million. Rounding out the top five was Paranormal Activity, which fell 48 percent to $8.6 million. Nevertheless, the $15,000 film's total gross has now risen to $97 million, putting it on track to pass the $100-million mark before next weekend. Meanwhile the critically praised Precious opened in just 18 theaters with $1.8 million -- or a staggering $100,000 per theater.

It was a miserly start to the Holiday movie season as the high profile movie positioned to bring the most cheer, A Christmas Carol, stumbled a bit out of the gate. Overall weekend business was off 14 percent from the same timeframe last year, when Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa landed, and was on the low end for early November.
Haunting approximately 6,500 screens at 3,683 sites, A Christmas Carol churned out an estimated $31 million, selling fewer tickets than Elf and The Santa Clause 2 and far fewer than star Jim Carrey's last Christmas movie, How the Grinch Stole Christmas. On the other hand, Carol's opening grossed more than The Polar Express, the previous performance-capture animated Christmas movie from director Robert Zemeckis that chugged strongly throughout the 2004 season despite its disappointing $23.3 million start, but that picture was muted by The Incredibles whereas Carol had no such direct competitor. According to distributor Walt Disney Pictures' exit polling,

Tropic Thunder Scribe Taking on Men In Black 3

With a $589 million worldwide take for the first film and a $441 million worldwide pull-in for the second, I am shocked beyond belief (and a little appreciative) that Sony never force-fed a third Men In Black film. Granted, there were Saturday morning cartoons, video games, and amusement park rides to rake in some cash off the brand, but a third film, with or without Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones’ involvements, could have easily been thrown together years ago.
Well, those “years ago” have turned in to today, as Risky Biz Blog is reporting that Tropic Thunder screenwriter Etan Cohen is hard at work on a third film in the Men In Black franchise. Sony officially announced the project back in April, but, since then, not much has moved on the project until now.
Though no deal has been set in stone, Risky Biz is also stating Barry Sonnenfeld, who helmed the first two films,

Men In Black III Nabs A Writer

The Mib may be about to protect the earth from the scum of the universe... again. For Men In Black III has today found a writer, most probably a director, and possibly ignited the interest of a star.Etan Cohen, one of the writers on Tropic Thunder and, lest we forget, Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa, has been tapped to write the script for the second sequel in the Men In Black franchise, and with Sony keen to get their cash cow up and running asap, he’s apparently already quite a way into his draft. No plot details as yet, of course, but since when was a Men In Black film about plot? These films are about sly, deadpan jokes and outlandish special effects – you know, the modus operandi of director, Barry Sonnenfeld.Speaking of Sonnenfeld, he’s tentatively attached, although The Hollywood Reporter says nothing has been set in stone yet.

A progress has been made in the development of "Men in Black 3" with the hiring of a writer. The Hollywood Reporter (THR)'s Risky Biz Blog reported that one of the "Tropic Thunder" screenwriters, Etan Cohen, has been brought on board by Sony Pictures to work on the script to the latest installment of the sci-fi comedy series.
THR claimed that the studio has the intention "to continue the franchise's top-tier status" with the addition of Cohen. The latest writer brought to the "Mib" franchise, Cohen is reported to be "deep into his draft" for the third movie. Ed Solomon wrote the script for the first "Mib", and Robert Gordon and Barry Fanaro for the second one.
The scribe aside, the publication suggested that Barry Sonnenfeld, the director of the first two "Mib" is attached to the new film. Still, it noted that no formal deal or offer has been made just yet.

Its expensive to see movies here in New York City, or pretty much anywhere these days. I did an about face a couple weeks ago when the price of admission to see Up in 3D was sixteen dollars. I’m sorry, but I just don’t understand the reason behind 3D, and I don’t see why I need to be charged another 4 dollars to see a movie in 3D.
I come from a small town in upstate New York where going to the movies has been, for years, six dollars. Since living in Manhattan, I’ve had to initiate something called “The 12 Dollar Rule,” as in is the movie actually worth 12 dollars? Sure, for movies like Star Trek, The Dark Knight and others, its worth that kind of money. However, there is a solution! During the summer there are all kinds of outdoor screenings of classic movies for free around New York City.
