Adjust your calenders, and don't hold your breath for Terrence Malick. (If you ever hold your breath for Malick, that is. His latest opus, The Tree of Life, starring Brad Pitt and Sean Penn, was given a tentative release date of December 25, 2009. But it won't be making that date, according to Apparition Films' Bob Berney. Thompson on Hollywood caught up with Berney, who said the date was "wishful" thinking, and that the film will not be released in 2009.
Why the delay? If you know Malick at all, you know the answer to that. The film is not yet finished. The Tree of Life has already been a 30-year journey for Malick, and another year (or two, or three) won't make any difference to the notoriously meticulous director. No one has even seen the film, or knows what form its final cut will take. All that's really known about the movie …

Cross another possible contender off your Oscar '09 ballot: Terrence Malick reportedly won't have his decades-in-the-making The Tree of Life ready to go by the end of the year. The film features Brad Pitt as the father of a boy whose lost innocence haunts him as he grows into a man played by Sean Penn. As per Malick's usual, it's highly conceptual, rigorously crafted and now indefinitely delayed. …

After the Telluride Film Festival came to a close on September 7, I began thinking about putting together a new Oscar update, but all there was to talk about was the initial hype surrounding Jason Reitman's Up In the Air and the reactions to John Hillcoat's The Road, which also debuted at the Venice Film Festival before both films made the trip north to the Toronto Film Festival, which is what I was waiting for to see where things settled following the early storm of raves. It's been a busy couple of weeks of festivals and while talk is loud for Up In the Air and its position as a serious contender is assured, where it will fall is still undecided (I came dangerously close to saying "up in the air"). Recently I saw a comment online with someone referring to the 2009 awards season saying it felt more like …

We already knew Bill Pohlad and Bob Berney were putting together a new motion picture distribution company after they acquired the distribution rights to Jane Campion's Bright Star, we just didn't know the name of the company, which has today been revealed to be Apparition. In a press release just sent out, it is said the goal of the company is to be a fiercely independent, artist friendly distributor, one that champions the highest quality films and markets them with unmatched passion and commitment. However, beyond what was already pretty much known, the press release also says Apparition will be handling distribution of The Tree of Life, written and directed by Terrence Malick, starring Brad Pitt and Sean Penn. The news comes as a bit of a surprise to me since I had only heard about it being released by Summit Entertainment, even as recently as May, ScreenDaily said …

Paramount and Brad Pitt’s Plan B are teaming up to produce a big-screen version of John Le Carre’s novel, The Night Manager.First published in 1993, Le Carre’s thriller concerns Jonathan Pine, a night manager at a top Cairo hotel who gets mixed up in a web of intrigue when he agrees to spy on a dangerous arms dealer. The likes of The Constant Gardener or Richard Burton’s The Spy Who Came In From The Cold aside, Le Carre adaptations have been pretty thin on the ground – and, when they have made it to the big screen, they’ve been patchy in quality. Let’s hope that The Night Manager bucks that trend. At the moment, Pitt’s only producing the movie. And one of his first acts has been to bring on Robert Edwards, himself an intelligence veteran, to adapt the screenplay. But his role in …

Brad Pitt's upcoming project with Terrence Malick, The Tree Of Life, will reportedly be presented as three different movies. Speaking about the film to Empire, visual effects guru Mike Fink (The Golden Compass, Tropic Thunder) said that he has just started work on the ambitious project, which is being slated for release on IMAX screens. "There's going to be a 35mm release, a shorter IMAX version, and then they're talking about another shorter 35mm version which isn't quite the IMAX version but not the feature length one either," he explained. "We're animating dinosaurs, but it's not Jurassic Park. The attempt is (more) …

Chicago – The legacy of Oscar winners following their wins with horrible career choices is long and well-recorded. Perhaps the best piece of news about this year’s Academy Award winners is that they are unlikely to produce a “Snow Dogs,” “Gothika,” or “Aeon Flux” any time soon. The upcoming projects for 2009 Academy Award winners is a more promising slate than most years.
The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus
Photo credit: Reel Movie News Of course, the most well-documented post-Oscar career choice for this year’s winners is that of “The Dark Knight“‘s Heath Ledger, who will have only one more film released, Terry Gilliam’s “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus”. From the visionary director of “Brazil” and “Twelve Monkeys,” “Parnassus” will be the epilogue for Ledger’s filmography, another brief glimpse at this excellent actor who left us far too soon.
Ledger was midway through filming the fantasy movie when …

Directed by the no longer totally unprolific Terrence Malick
Starring Brad Pitt, Jessica Chastain and three child actors (Sean Penn and Fiona Shaw also appear)
Synopsis is vague --something about a young family in the 1950s and the loss of innocence. But do Malick's plots ever inspire "ooh!"s. No, it's the filmmaking. Bring on the shots of grass, trees and skies!
Brought to you by Plan B Entertainment (originally founded by Brad Grey, Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston.
Expected Release Date It's Malick. I won't even try to guess
Nathaniel: Malick has directed only four features in his lifetime (Badlands, Days of Heaven, The Thin Red Line and The New World) and each time we lose several critics to The Rapture when they surface. Since it made other lists besides mine, I assume you're disciples?
Ja: I got to see Badlands on a big screen last year, and that …
