In 91 years, no one has ever been Oscar-nominated for playing a pope. That could change this year if Jonathan Pryce (lead actor) and Anthony Hopkins (supporting) are recognized for the crowd-pleasing “The Two Popes,” as, respectively, Pope Francis and Pope Benedict XVI.
The film depicts their mutual wariness, which turns into friendship. And thanks to director Fernando Meirelles and writer Anthony McCarten, it also packs a punch in dealing with the men’s very different socio-political backgrounds.
“The Two Popes” sounds like a TV movie that would be shown on cable every Easter. In fact, Italian TV has done a bevy of papal biopics over the years, and America has had a hand in several, including Jon Voight (!) in the 2005 “Pope John Paul II” miniseries.
But Vatican City has rarely appeared on the big screen. “The Agony and the Ecstasy” (1965) and “The Shoes of the Fisherman” (1968) were both intended as...

The Emmy race for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series has swung back and forth like a pendulum this decade — and if the trend continues, it’ll be Breaking Bad‘s Aaron Paul (a winner in 2010 and 2012, but not 2011 and 2013) who’ll stroll up to the poduium in this even-numbered year.

Yet while Paul won’t have last year’s champ — the now inelligible Bobby Cannavale of Boardwalk Empire — to thwart his chances, there will be other Emmy darlings in his path, including Game of Thrones‘ Peter Dinklage,...

How weird is it that, out of Sacha Baron Cohen’s three trademark characters, Ali G is now the least famous of them all? With this past weekend’s strong “Brüno” opening, the UK-born and raised funnyman has once again fooled the world into believing that he is someone else. Where he goes from here is anyone’s guess, but as we play Monday-morning quarterback there is an even more pressing question: is Cohen the greatest cinematic "chameleon" of all time?
There are few things I love more in a movie than when an actor fully immerses himself in another persona. Sometimes it’s for comedy, sometimes it’s for drama... but whatever the performance is in the name of, when done right it can make that performer a legend. Below are my favorite "chameleon" actors of all time. Post your thoughts in the comments section and tell us where...

The story of a man who is on a fast track to sainthood was no match for the sinners of Desperate Housewives and Grey's Anatomy on Sunday. The first half of CBS' Pope John Paul II miniseries fizzled on Sunday, drawing only about 8.3 million viewers from 9:30-11:30, according to preliminary estimates from Nielsen Media Research. CBS' lineup was thrown off its regular start times by a roughly half-hour football overrun at the start of primetime, but preliminary estimates indicate a weak turnout that barely registered on the adults 18-49 demo radar. CBS' numbers were only slightly better than the unimpressive showing ABC had on Thursday with its papal biopic Have No Fear: The Life of Pope John Paul II.
