Scenes We Love: The Band Wagon

13 November 2009 3:45 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

We have television to thank for a serious dance renaissance. TV shows like So You Think You Can Dance and Dancing with the Stars have introduced a new generation to the joys of the samba, the waltz, and the quickstep, while High School Musical (and now, Glee) brought song-and-dance production numbers back into vogue. Suddenly it seems like the world's gone dance crazy. Of course, geeks like me, who grew up watching the great movie musicals, have been dance crazy for most of our lives.

On this week's episode of Sytycd, show producer/judge Nigel Lythgoe lectured a pair of dancers about the importance of telling a story through choreography, instructing them that technical proficiency isn't enough --the audience wants to understand who the characters are, what the relationship is, and what they're trying to convey. Well, if he'd wanted to illustrate that concept, Lythgoe could do worse than to »

Glee's Cory Monteith Screams: "I'm Not Zac Efron!"

12 November 2009 8:14 PM, PST | E! Online | See recent E! Online news »

Supercutie Glee star Cory Monteith gave us all kinds of surprises the other night at the launch party for Assassin's Creed 2 (that's a video game, people) at Voyeur. Also, it's not R.Pattz-time or anything, but gotta say we now have a massive crush on the singing hunk. First off, he's tall. Gotta say, that is impossible to find in this town, trust. And clearly we weren't the only ones who felt this way. The gals blindly flocked around Cory pretty much all night. And, man, was he into them (if you catch our gaydar drift). But more importantly, what did C.M. have to say about that daunting Zac Efron and his High School Musical crew? Do read on: How does it feel to be an overnight... »

The Gay Guide to Glee: Episode 9, "Wheels"

12 November 2009 8:00 AM, PST | Vanity Fair | See recent Vanity Fair news »

Glee is the gayest program on television, combining, as all the best entertainments do, high school, hunky athletes, locker rooms, assertive girls, dorky girls, divas, illicit crushes, well-intentioned but clueless adults, a snide and fashion-forward gay teen, and an ass-load of choreographed dance moves. It’s like High School Musical, but even gayer. With its queering of everything it touches—the star quarterback, the football team, kids in wheelchairs, 80s arena rock—it’s also one of the most subversive shows on television, representing, as I’ve said before, the penultimate stage in the homosexual takeover of America (final step: Michelle Obama comes out). So in my new role as Vf.com’s “fun and faggy editor” (this title has yet to be approved by the front office, but I expect it’s simply a matter of paperwork), I will be doing a weekly recap of the show every Thursday. »

Better late than never, we suppose. Ashley Tisdale hit up M Magazine's 2009 Hollywood Halloween event at New York's Marquee night club on Wednesday night. You know, about two weeks after the rest of the world tends to celebrate All Hallow's Eve. Oh well; what the High School Musical star lacks in timeliness, she makes up for with stylishness. Zac Efron Goes to White House in the Name of Art

11 November 2009 1:40 AM, PST | Celebrity Mania | See recent Celebrity Mania news »

Starring in "Me and Orson Welles" has made it possible for Zac Efron to get inside the White House, but promoting the movie wasn't the only thing on his agenda. On Tuesday, November 10, the Richard Samuels depicter along with co-star Claire Danes and director Richard Linklater made a visit to the principal workplace of the U.S. President to lobby for art funding.

While it was unfortunate that he and his companions didn't get the chance to meet with the President, they did manage to meet administration officials, include actor Kal Penn. During the conference with the officials, the trio tried to convince the office in providing more funding for the arts in public schools. The effort is part of their outreach to support Americans for the Arts.

Of his visit, the star of "High School Musical" said simply as quoted by The Hill, "I admire anyone who has devoted their lives to public service. »

Zac Efron Steps Out Solo...So Where's Vanessa?

10 November 2009 10:40 AM, PST | E! Online | See recent E! Online news »

Zac Efron just got back into town from filming The Death and Life of Charlie St. Cloud in Vancouver and has wasted no time hitting up the party scene. Last Wednesday, he swung by Nylon's party at Xiv solo, where his High School Musical costar Ashley Tisdale was also hanging. (The two had just lunched together on the Monday prior.) And on Friday night, Zac was all over the place—first heading downtown to check out the opening of Hyde Lounge at the Staples Center arena. The HSM hunk hung courtside at the Lakers game for a bit before swinging by the lounge, where he held court with three guy friends. High School Musical: Zac Efron Promotes 'Me and Orson Welles' at White House

10 November 2009 10:16 AM, PST | buddytv.com | See recent BuddyTV news »

Since wrapping up his Disney career with High School Musical, Zac Efron has been soaring all throughout Hollywood.  His recent effort, Me and Orson Welles, even got him inside the White House.  But promoting the film wasn't the only thing on his agenda.

The Hill reports that the 22-year-old actor was with Claire Danes and the acclaimed director of Me and Orson Welles, Richard Linklater in Washington D.C. last Tuesday.  The trio didn't exactly meet with the President or the first daughters.  They did, however, manage to face several administration officials.

Frugal Christmas arrives early for Disney at UK box office

10 November 2009 9:04 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

It's only November and A Christmas Carol is already No 1, albeit with a lacklustre £1.92m. The box-office feast will only truly start next week with 2012 and the Twilight sequel

The chart-topper

Knocking Michael Jackson's This Is It off the top spot, Robert Zemeckis's motion-capture animation A Christmas Carol can at least be satisfied with its chart position. As for its opening gross – £1.92m – that's another matter entirely.

In the first place, it's behind the openings of the previous two motion-capture films from the Zemeckis stable: Polar Express earned £2.14m from its first weekend of wide play in 2004, and Beowulf debuted with £2.2m in November 2007. (And bear in mind, there were fewer than 60 3D screens in the UK when Beowulf opened, compared with 260 now.) Second, A Christmas Carol's debut is well behind that of 2009 big-hitters Bolt, Monsters Vs Aliens, Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs and Up. It's even »

It's Complicated trailer: actually, it's quite simply a bit sad

10 November 2009 3:12 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Never mind that it stars Meryl Streep and soon-to-be Oscars hosts Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin; would you watch a movie named after a Facebook relationship status?

A natural set of candidates came to mind last week when people started talking about possible Oscars hosts. The return of Hugh Jackman, perhaps? Or golden boy and similarly all-singing, all-dancing Neil Patrick Harris? Or even both? A young, hip comedian? A satirist? Or … oh. It was suddenly announced. Oh. It's Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin.

Yes, they're both veteran presenters of Saturday Night Live, yet, somehow, they didn't bubble to the top of the list for most people. So, what were the Academy Award producers thinking? Had they, perhaps, seen this?

Judging by trailer alone (it's what we do here), It's Complicated is the story of when Meryl met Alec.

Or rather, when Meryl met Alec again.

Meryl, here called Jane, is »

Zac Efron adjusted his shades as he headed out for an appointment in La yesterday, and kept his eyes covered during a stop at the Sunset Towers hotel today. He arrived in town earlier this week, and wasted no time getting back to his social routine - attending a bash thrown by Nylon Guys in his honor last night along with Ashley Tisdale. It was the latest meetup for the High School Musical friends, who are spending some quality time together while his girlfriend and her Bff Vanessa Hudgens is off working on her new movie, Sucker Punch. Jem and The Holograms To Become A Bad Movie

5 November 2009 1:16 PM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Another day, another piece of childhood ripped away from those nostalgic for the 1980s. Having a Y chromosome, it wasn't exactly my cup of tea, but I am sure that many a girl will begin weeping as it has been announced that Hasbro has sold off yet another one of its toy's film rights, this time being Jem and the Holograms. With Stretch Armstrong, Ouija Board, Candyland, Battleship, Clue, and Monopoly all headed out in the next few years, the news exactly exactly shocking. (I'm still waiting for the Lincoln Logs movie, however). As of now, relatively unknown Chinese director John Chu is, at least temporarily, attached to the project, as is High School Musical Scribe Peter Barsocchini, according to Pajiba, though it is not yet known whether Barsocchini will write the script or merely produce. Is there going to be anything in this movie that wasn't said in Spice »

Spotted: Ashley Tisdale Rolls In Beverly Hills

5 November 2009 10:48 AM, PST | MTV Newsroom | See recent MTV Newsroom news »

Every day a multitude of stars wanders through the halls of MTV News to talk about their latest projects and goof around with our intrepid correspondents. But sometimes we catch stars elsewhere, and that's why we put together Spotted!, a daily compendium of stars in the wild.

Apparently, "getting photographed in the front seat of a car" is the new "getting photographed shopping in Target" for stars in Los Angeles. A few weeks ago, Adam Lambert was spotted stealing a kiss from then-boyfriend Drake Labry, and a few weeks later Taylor Swift and Taylor Lautner inspired plenty of "are they or aren't they?" rumors when they were seen in a car during a shopping trip. Yesterday, singer and "High School Musical" star Ashley Tisdale spent some time with music video director Scott Speer in Beverly Hills, and yes, they were spending time together in their ride.

After last month's report of 19-year-old High School Musical 3 star Matt Prokop being rushed to the Icu, he has fully recovered and is returning with a vengeance.  A Furry Vengeance.  The actor has landed a role in another family comedy coming next year, putting him alongside veterans Brendan Fraser and Brooke Shields.

Talking to the Victoria Advocate, Matt Prokop revealed that his role in the movie slightly mirrors his real life.  The story of the film is set in the Oregon wilderness where local wildlife threatens the plans of a real estate developer.  Playing Tyler, the agent's sarcastic son, was a great experience for the budding actor.

New on DVD: Almodóvar, "High School Musical" and shirtless dudes!

3 November 2009 2:09 PM, PST | AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news »

Like celebrity deaths, good things come in threes — at least they do this week on DVD.

Read on for more!

The films of gay Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar go in and out of print on DVD without any apparent rhyme or reason, so if you want to include his work in your home library, it's best to snap them up whenever you can.

This week sees three of his finest films getting new DVD releases. The Oscar-winning All About My Mother (newly remastered) still ranks as my very favorite of his movies, brilliantly mixing his gifts for outrageous comedy and tear-jerking melodrama. It's a "women's picture" in the very best sense.

Almodóvar's breakthrough in this country was the hysterical farce Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown — there's been talk for some time about turning this into a stage musical, so now's the perfect time to catch up with »
